Rob Posted February 2, 2009 Report Posted February 2, 2009 (edited) Guys, I am making some small (3 or 4oz) pirks for use as the weight when feathering. How useful would it be to make bigger ones for inshore fishing? Thoughts please? Should I attach a jelly worm or muppet etc? Hook will obviously be included!! Rob (OK you'v sussed it, it is a Nickel plated piece of 15 mm copper filed with lead!!!!) Edited February 2, 2009 by rob francis Quote
Adam F Posted February 2, 2009 Report Posted February 2, 2009 It's a good idea Rob, I have a couple that I use for feathering - they definatly make a difference - (just ask Crazy Fred how well it works in Alderney against a normal set-up for feathering launce) For this use I dont rig a hook or muppet - the purpose is simply an attractor. I also make mine a bit differently - I cut the ends at 45 deg and drill the long side out to take a split ring and swivel. If you do rig with a hook, you'll pick up the occasional bass on the pirk - but personally I'd rather be a bit more sporting for bass. Quote
Wedger Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 I use a 12mm stainless tube cut flat on the bottom and at 45 degrees on top. Hole drilled for split ring which holds the assist hook and clip swivel. The core is lead filled whilst the base is resting in one half of a 1 oz ball mould to give a clean fast drop to the bottom. The body is filled to just below the start of the bevelled head. This give a bit of action but I believe causes a bit of swirling and disturbance (attraction). I also drill a hole either into the lead or through the head into which I push a mini glowlite when fishing deeper water. They polish up time after time. (I must try some home crome plating). Quote
Rob Posted February 3, 2009 Author Report Posted February 3, 2009 Trev, Isn't chrome plating REALLY nasty to do? carsonagenic etc.... Or can you use substitue chemicals now? I think that is why there is a Nickel plating system at work - it is fairly harmless, but you would wnat to drink the fluid!!! Rob Quote
Wedger Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 Eeeeeer don't know but I must find out !! I remember doing some chrome plate at school in the chem lab - 'twas in the cabinet but it was back in the early 70's Can you polish nickel up Quote
Rob Posted February 3, 2009 Author Report Posted February 3, 2009 Yep - it hardly needs polishing! I'll bring it on Thursday - all I have done is given it a little polish with brasso. And it would have been better if cleaned correctly first as my fingerprint can be seen in the finished product! Rob Quote
Gazza Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 i use a 6oz Dexter wedge myself ....only for feathering mackeral though! Too expensive to lose on a wreck.....like the look of the pirk but probably better with 45 degrees each end and possibly a kink or twist to make it 'flutter' got a very small abount of 15mm chrome copper pipe here if you want to experiment Gary Quote
