plaicemat Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 I have recently acquired an iPod Touch and have been busily downloading Apps for it and discovered a great one. It is a Navionic Gold UK App which gives me the charts for the whole of the UK and, randomly, Holland. All the details that you will find on your chartplotter. Not sure what I'm going to use it for yet but what a great toy. I think I'll use it to store all my favourite marks on, then I don't have to access the chartplotter to retrieve one. Terry. Quote
plaicemat Posted June 9, 2009 Author Report Posted June 9, 2009 Also, Windguru, now that's useful. Terry. Quote
djredrupp Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 Did it cost much to get all the charts???? or is it not a detailed chart, as you would see on the plotter? Dan Quote
plaicemat Posted June 10, 2009 Author Report Posted June 10, 2009 It is as you see it on your chartplotter and it costs Quote
djredrupp Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 Ipods dont have gps do they? isnt it just a wifi based location system? Dan .... backup plotter plan out the window, as there arent many wifi points in the channel!!! Quote
djredrupp Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 Ansewerd my own quesiton On Apple chat,... the verdict: Ipods dont have GPS, but using a wifi network you can get onto a mapping site, to get directions, then follow them... so i guess the directions to the cod grounds would be "head south" lol One thing the technician at apple did say,, (might be useful to you terry), you can download a skype application for your Ipod touch, then make free calls when you are accessing a wifi network! great white Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 I am still looking for a good PC system that I can use at home when passage/trip planning. I use mapcreate to load/save info to from my plotter and thats much easier than putting marks in on the plotter. I also use sonar viewer to replay the recordings taken through the Lowrance combo unit, again that is great But I would love to be able to get Navionics gold info on Mapcreate or simular. I am considering getting PC plotter, as it uses navionics . With laptop, 12 volt adaptor, navionics card and gps ariel it would be another plotter with AIS. I have downloaded the demo, and as its the solent Isle of wight it does show what this can do and it does look impressive on the large monitor in my study. just need to justify the cost now!! If anyone knows of a cost effective way of getting this facility on a PC please let me know. Charlie Quote
Adam F Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 If anyone knows of a cost effective way of getting this facility on a PC please let me know. What, as in 'free'!! Quote
plaicemat Posted June 10, 2009 Author Report Posted June 10, 2009 Thanks for the skype wheeze, Dan. I didn't suggest that it was possible to use as an alternative to a chartplotter, however, it's very good for planning/hypothesising when away from home and storing ones private marks on and being able to see them in context. O/k, I admit it, I'm a bit of a gadget tart! Tidal info is quite useful though with a bit of extra information to hand. Terry. Quote
