Overrun Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 Heard a report of Herring being caught within Poole Harbour today, is this right? I'm thinking more likely Twaite Shad (we get a few at Christchurch around now) Cheers James Quote
petesnr Posted September 1, 2009 Report Posted September 1, 2009 In the past there have been good runs of herring in the harbour in the autumn. they make great bass baits and taste wonderful if you can cope with the bones. the tiniest shrimp rigs seem to work. but the last few years have been a bit hit and miss. Fingers crossed for a good run this year. Quote

Fingers crossed for a good run this year. I found that in the past they arrived in the harbour with the first proper frosts. It seems a bit early for them yet, wlthough they are often sporadically caught in mid Summer just offshore with the mackerel so why not? Quote
plaicemat Posted September 4, 2009 Report Posted September 4, 2009 And don't forget the annual run of haddock! Terry. Quote
Overrun Posted September 13, 2009 Author Report Posted September 13, 2009 thanks guys, sussed it now, Sand Smelt. Quote
Wedger Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 A few years ago I had one in late August out in the bay while jigging for mackerel. Small feather rig bumped on the bottom a few times before working up through the column. never seen any numbers until November though. Quote
