jay kay
What is the differance between a gps and a plotter? I want to buy something handheld because i cant leave it on my boat, i want something i can save marks on and thing like that.
Rob
There are GPS devices that have no maps \ charts, but some have basic charts and data (my backup Garmin has marine buoy data and that is about it). A plotter has fully Navigation charts held electronically, they do everyting! Tides charts, Tidal flows, depths, obstructions, Moon and Sun data. Details of VHF channels for habours etc. HTH Rob

great white
Hi The trouble with hand held GPS/Plotters is the size of the screen It can be hard enough to see what is going on on a fixed set, reduce the size further and I would be knackered. A GPS set giving position, distance to waypoint, course to steer etc would be OK but using plotters when drifting marks would be very hard. Maybe worth considering a larger fixed set that could be removed at the end of the day. [i think that is what the Kyakers do] Charlie
plaicemat
That's what a lot of us do, Charlie, even some well known members with larger boats. The Lowrance and Garmin sets are easily removed and give a much clearer and more easily followed display. Not a lot of difference in price, either. Terry. great white
Yeah that does make sense. Any ideas which ones are worth buying and what sort of money im looking at? Thanks guys. Need to have a look at what is available and shop around I am afraid. My choice is Lowrance, but others like Garmin, Hummingbird, Standard and Raymarine A lot of deals available. when considering which make, look at where it will be mounted and how exposed that area is. We take the fishfinders off the RIB's at work but the ends of the cables suffer in the weather and eventually fail. You may wish to pick a set that has some sort of cover for the connections. Brian
Could be worth looking at JG Technologies in Weymouth, Here. I'd say go for the largest screen and most pixels you can afford. Don't forget the cost of the Chart, if it's not included.
Rob
the cables suffer in the weather and eventually fail. Indeed - I apply vasaline on a regular basis to the connections to keep the corrosion away. Rob
wotu2uk
the problem with Vaseline, imo, is that it can attack some plastics, I believe. John PS, looked around the web and am no longer sure that this is true. May just be old wives tale. britboard
i put all my cable ends into a ziplock bag with a silica gel pack, seems to keep everything dry and corrosion free. Simon L
