I think the most important thing when taking children out is that you're pretty sure of catching something or you can really put them off. The first thing I did with my son when he was five was take him out with a Rappala and he caught two bass both about 2lbs. This is usually a sure fire way of catching a bass even if you do throw most of them back it keeps the youngsters interested. Another good one is when the bream come in as you usually catch a few.
