  21. we had a good day of sun yesterday and we made the most of it by getting out on the boat for a spin around the gulf . we launched at 7am from browns bay beach and headed out to the noises which is group of small lsland north of rangitoto. the sea was like a mill pond as I don't really know were to fish I just followed the other boats it was so good to be out has I have not been out for a while due to a leaking tank . soon as we reached there after a trip of 20mins we found a nice drop off on the sounder from 40ft to 110ft so we droped anchor and fished in to the drop off . I set up the boys rods and got them casted out and within seconds of droping the bait james is in he has hooked a kohawai and the poor little bloke strugled to reel it in as theses fish fight very well it weighted just under 2lb but he loved it ' so it was my turn then a small snapper which went back my mate had a few small one but nothing that big so we pulled up the anchor and moved to the worm beds for some driffing. ryan was the first to catch with the first keeper nice little snapper with nice blue spots on it . As the day went on the sea started to blow up so we started to head back stopping on the way for some driffing, by the end of the day we took 4 snapper home for tea but we caught 25 to 30 fish between four of us oh and I nearly forgot the kohawai we caught 4 of them aswell . on the way to one of the marks we fished, we were joined by a pod of dolphins that were jumping in my wake and swimming right next to the boat I could of touched them they were that close it was nice for the boys to see them i will put some photos up the only down side of the day was that i got burnt on the backs on legs the sun is so strong here.
  22. sorry to hear that paul just as well you did not catch them they would of took you to court for assasult and they would proberly win as the average man can not protect his property anymore .
  23. When fining auckland man paul roger's $3000 for grossly breaching his snapper limit . manukau district court's judge hubble saids this type of offending was prevalent in the fishing community and it was important that the message got through. Roger's who was caught with Large numbers of snapper hidden under the floorboards of his boat, has been fined $3000, ordered to pay $130 court costs, and had his boat, out-board motor, trailer and fishing gear forfeited to the crown . Paul roger's a 51-year-old yard man from mangere, auckland appeared in the manukau district court on august 13, after being caught by fishery officersat the kawakawa bay boat ramp in february . Rogers two other adults had been fishing in rogers 4.4m aluminium fishing boat . they were leaving the fishing ramp when fishery officers stopped their vehicle and asked the inspect their catch. Rogers showed the officers 36 legal-sized snapper in two chilly bins. As fishers in auckland area are allowed to catch nine snapper each per day, the 36 snapper represented the legal maximum catch for the four people on board. Fishery officers then inspected the rest of the vessel , finding a flap that had been cut in the floorboards under the petrol tank. Under this flap ,officers saw a number of snapper packed into the boat's bilges. Upon removing the entire floor, they found a further 85 snapper. Rogers admitted hiding the illegally taken fish to try and avoid being caught by fishery offcers who regularly patrol the kawakawa bay ramp . As the skipper of the boat, rodgers was deemed to be in possession of,and responsible for, all 121 snapper found on board . Once the three legal limits of nine snapper each for the other two adults and the child were taken into account ,rogers was left in possession of 94 snapper , over 10 times his daily legal limit. This was the third time rogers had been caught with excess snapper . In september 2000 he was convicted of possessing 244 snapper and ordered to pay a fine of $1200 and court costs of $130 . His vessel was forfeited to the crown on that occasion, too. Then in November last year he was caught with 16 snapper (severn more than his limit ) and given a $250 Infringement Notice . It is very disappointing to see a man who has been caught twice previously - and already lost one boat -being caught again with large numbers of excess snapper". what does he do with them all . mark b
  24. At last November is on the horizon, bringing the bigger snapper with it . males normally appear in the gulf first, keen to put on condition prior to spawning. they will fall to just about any bait , but the big slabs of fresh kahawai or whole jack mackerel when anchored , or jack macherel, squid and pilchard while drifting , are best . soft-plastics will often out-fish fresh baits on the drift. Althought I grab the soft-bait out-fit on most fishing trips , I perfer to feel the take of a big snapper while straylining with mono . Feeling the line accelerate off the reel and lifting the rod to set the hook is far more exciting in my book. It is also a lot smoother than the jerky thumps that go through you with the non-stretchbraid! The mokes (small islands in the gulf) are at their best in November. Bigger fish have been hard to find in recent months , but November should be a lot better. dritfting more ground to be covered, but anchoring allows you to fish down a berley trail and bring the fishto you . I have enjoyed success with both methods, so it comes down to personal preference. Great Barrier Island has plenty of fish ; it is just a matter of getting the to bite. The flats out off rosalie bay hold lots of above-average pan snapper , with some 8kg fish thrown in . Outside tryphena and out towards Channel Islands is always worth a shot, as is the northern end off miners reef and the needles . Little Barrier has been fishing well all year , and will only improve as summer sets in . Trevally off Te Titoki point are fighting-fit and best targeted using a consistent berley trail and floating back compact baits on small hooks and light line . Some of these big trevallys look like small kings when they appear in the berley . Snapper will be scattered around the Island , with good schools coming into the gulf through the craddock channel . Flat rock should start to hot up a bit , with the dusk being the most productive time of the day . Fishing around kawau will improve , especially out around Motuora and through the blanche channel . This area is not all that deep , and some big fish will be hanging around . Drift or anchor- the choice is yours . Report by richard bathurst
