No fishing on Neo this weekend for me - no gearbox
-
Can't see why it should put people off. If you want something spell checking type it in word and spell check it. Even then it won't stop you writing say Quite instead of Quiet ( for example ). As a little competition ( no prizes though ) - see if u can spot the mistake on the sponsors page for the november comp....

The permits to fish Stanpit which is south of Claypool ( ie. The area where you see the mullet fisherman on the LHS as you steam out ) states that spinning is not allowed ..... However, a blind eye is turned to those spinning with a rag for mullet. The intention is to stop spinning for sea trout and salmon. ( Didnt stop me catching one on a regworm a few years ago though ! ) Spinning ( and even worst trolling ) in Claypool is a definite no no and would get you into grief.

You think that looks bad - you should see the propellor
-
And the cavitation plate ( I am beginning to think it was a good job I had holes drilled in it for the old wings, since it has stopped the fracture at the hole as opposed to maybe breaking into the gearbox.

Jack, It wasnt the actual pier ( even I wouldn't miss that ). It is off from the groyne though and is near to the bit marked beerpan rocks. ( It is marked as 0.3 metres deep ). I have got the gearbox of the outboard now and sitting ready for welding repairs. As promised piccies to show how strong Honda Outboards are !

Good luck James and hopefully a new boat for the drive come next spring

Paul, I will grab a poster off you this evening. It was quite strange actually, I phoned and told him I had damaged the prop and engine and he asked if I went out of Christchurch. I told him yes - he says "damaged in the run ? " I say - no at Hengistbury Head - damaged prop / skeg and ..... he stops me and says - cavitation plate as well. I am thinking "How the ?!?! does he know that ! " Then I remembered - you been speaking to Paul Jennings haven't you !!!

Alun, Yep - that's the patch, there appeared to be two patches quite close together. The fact that the mackeral boats go close in by the groyne was actually my undoing - I had assumed ( incorrectly ) that the water was deep all around that area. Consulting the chart you can see the shallow rocky area I hit ( labelled as 0.3 m ) - but easy to see this with the benefit of hindsight. As they say, familiarity breeds contempt and I was certainly guilty of that. The tide flow at Barton wasn't too strong though, but the difference in heights was impressive. ( I put it down to the annular eclipse ) ?? Just need to get the skeg and cavitation plate repaired before the Open Comp.

Spooky timing there Martin !

Hydraulics are no problem - my engine doesn't have any Propellor Revolutions quoted around

No sole for the trip out last night but an extremely eventful day nonetheless .... At Barton we had Pout, schoolies, scad and a bream. The tide range was impressively huge which leads me onto the eventful part of the day. Left work early to get out before LW so we could have a bash at fishing X-Ray before dark. Nice new propellor and a bit of manoeuvring through the run ( which was ebbing at 5 knots ) and we managed to squeeze over the bar without touching bottom once. Headed for X-ray via Hengistbury Head - 14 knots ( which was not too bad for Neo ) and purring along. Anglers fishing off the goyne so gave the groyne a wide berth. Suddenly BANG - engine cover was crooked and the engine was shaking like mad. First thought was we had hit a pot rope. Lifted engine up and the nice new propellor was folded over on all 3 blades. The skeg had three lumps out of it and the cavitation plate had a piece missing. We decided to plod back over to see what we had hit - only to realise that it was the rocks. This is the same route I usually take every time to X-Ray. Difference today was the tide was extremely low. So beware - it coudl have been a lot worst - bottom of the boat must have missed the rocks by under an inch... Beached the boat back on the spit by the run - changed over the propellor ( I knew it was a good idea to carry a spare ) and then went to Barton to fish. On return to Wick the water level was high enough to cover half the signs on the posts at the end of the slip - water was only about 3 foot below the top of the slipway. Now off to find someone to repair the skeg/cavity plate and to get a new propellor. Pictures to come !!

As it is becoming more of a rare event to receive top notch service and at a reasonable cost, I just have to say that if you ever need a dent repairing ( as in the one I put in my car with the boat ) then you can go far worst than to use Oops in Poole. Dropped car off, they gave me a lift to Poole station. Picked car up 2 days later and you would not know anything had happened to it. Cost for respray of lower part of boot and removing the dent -

Alun, Planning on a night trip to Barton on Tuesday PM - let me know if you are interested in going out on Tuesday or how you get on on Monday. Paul

Similar one from last month. Boat sinks The common theme is small boats sink so fast that there is not sufficient time to don lifejackets. Food for thought.

See this link :- Boat sinks - saved by kayak and surfboard

Jack, The fact you dont get the adverts at the top RHS of the forum means that there is something up with running JavaScript on your PC / Internet Explorer. ( That was what the playing around with settings was about ). The assistant is a Javascript popup. Now racking my brains as to what could cause this.

Many thanks all. The trip on Valkyrie went very well considering the weather. Only doggies and a conger for me and I lost a big ray when my braid broke ( was using 25lb braid on the new 20-50lb Fladden Solid-C rod - I think tte braid must have been weakened somewhere ) but an enjoyable trip nonetheless. One of the blokes fishing with us showed the way though with a bass of 11lb 8 oz after only 15 mins fishing and then went on to catch another of around 5 lb. Astounded at how well the cat handled the big seas. There is no way we would have fished the conditions in anything else. Definitely going back out again

If the above works then can you see the adverts at the top of this page for Tacklebargains ( as in the pictures of lures / reels etc. - three pictures to the top RHS of the page ). If you cannot see them then the problem is the setting for Internet Security - Scripting. Select Tools - Internet Options and then the Security Tab. Then press the "Custom Level" button. Scroll to the bottom and then up 4 items and you will see a button labelled "Scripting - Active Scripting Disable Enable Prompt. If the "Disable" button is select then this is your problem. Select the "Enable" button then press OK button, then press OK button on the window asking if you are sure. Then select OK on subsequent window left. Of course if the above was set to "Enable" then it is something else

The latest newsletter is available online at this YRL. Apologies for the lack of fancy formatting but a little busy at the moment. Newsletter

Jack, It could be because you have a "pop up blocker". The my assistant is a pop-up window, so you will need to tell the "pop-Up blocker" ( assuming this is the problem ) to allow pop ups from this site.
