    Anchor Float.

There are good details on how to do this on the Anka Yanka website. Using anchor retreval system The method is extremely effective and saves all that hauling rope. Just need to ensure that the rope does not get wrapped around the outboard leg as, I have been reliably informed. this is the quickest way of sinking a boat

    Orkney 520

Rich, I had a Honda 30 on the Orkney originally. They are fine until they need parts and then they start getting very expensive ( but I guess the same goes for any outboards ) According to Yamaha website salterns marina are authorised Yamaha dealers.

    Orkney 520

Fitting a cover when side rails are fitted is definitely possible as this is exactly what mine has. VHF aerial mounting when a cuddy is fitted is easy as it mounts on the top of the cuddy. I suspect you intended to query how you fit one with a fold up dodger ? ( Alun J is your man for that ) I have my second battery fitted in the same compartment as the first one ( there is plenty of space for two batteries ). I have the 1-Both-2 switch fitted inside the same compartment as well. Easily done. Downside though is extra weight at the stern.

    Orkney 520

Rich, I have had my 520 for over 3 years now. Well pleased with her. Initially, I had a 30HP Honda engine but now have a 40HP E-Tec which is a little overpowered for the boat ( but great fun ). Due to the extra weight of the E-Tec and having 60 litres of water + 2 batteries + extra 10 litres of fuel at the rear - I had problems with the boat porpoising at speed. Fitted smart-tabs and solved this in one go. Upside of the boat is they are more frugal than the heavier Warriors ( I can fish all day drifting for bass over the island and still use less than 25 litres ). In rough seas they have good handling characteristics. Double skinned so a bit more reassuring re: safety. Self draining deck ( although would be nice if it had a sort of one way valve fitted to stop the water coming back in when not underway ) Downside is they are more sensitive to your crew moving around whilst underway ( ask Mark B !! ) and slam a bit if attempting to go at speed through a rough sea. Also, mine tends to decide it wants to veer off course if the engine is trimmed in too far whilst under speed ( broaching ? ) - but we are talking 18knots + with rough sea. Trailer with mine is not suited to the boat, so harder to launch but still do-able single handed.

    Prop Testing

Mike, Yes - I will start If the steering is pulling to the right ( ie. Boat tries to turn right on its own accord ) then turn the trim tab such that the trailing edge of the tab ( ie. The bit furthest from the prop and nearest the back of the outboard ) is twisted to the right ( ie. Move the rear of the tab towards the direction that the boat is pulling ). On my E-Tec you can only turn the trim tab in this direction and this is because they know the pull will be to the right ( as in starboard ) due to prop steer. My boat pulled strongly to the right until I moved the tab. Beware a small movement has a dramatic effect.

  9. Happy birthday James. Not spending it fishing then ?
  10. The bass was in really good condition and is going to be feeding 5 people tomorrow ( Not fishing tomorrow as have family commitments ). The mackeral was far to small to eat though but perfect for catching bass Your trigger mark could be quite productive for bass as well I think ;-)
  11. Yes that was the one I was looking at. right by the bridge ( as in last boat before the bridge ).
  12. A friend of Helen was holidaying in the area with her boyfriend and I was asked if I could take him for a fishing trip out. Wind was blowing around F4 off shore, so harbour looked a little lumpy. I figured it would be OK out there as it was an offshore wind. The bay looked lovely and calm and a slight chop out towards x-ray. Drifted for mackeral and had them straight from the off. Lovely small joeys. Then headed off to get some shelter from the wind and try some drifts for bass with live joeys. Tides were small, so wasn't expecting much. Second drift and my fishing partner is stright into a bass - only around 16 inches long, so returned. Next drift over the same area yielded nothing. Third drift over a slightly different area and I was into a better stamp of fish. 5lb 8oz bass landed some 5-10 minutes later - the fish fought like a demon in around 15 ft of water. Then as we only had two mackeral left - headed to try on the ledge. This was hopeless as the northerly wind was causing us to drift in a southerly direction perpendicular to the tide. As tide was turning and starting to rough up - called it a day and headed back in.
  13. Paul - Was that the Orkney I was admiring from the slipway the other week ?

    Electrics

Typed from my armchair by the fire Wire wrapped joints ( not crimped but not soldered either ) are the preferred method within telephone switching equipment and within telephone exchanges as they give more reliable connections. Crimped connectors are used on military aircraft as well as soldered connections and a move to using crimped connectors occured some time ago. If crimped connectors are suitable for Tornado fighter bombers, they are good enough for me ( Bit unfair placing sleeves around a soldered joint and then comparing this with a crimped joint which is keft unsleeved ? ) Crimping Facts Solder versus crimp
  15. I suspect in PJ's case they probably had "cased the joint" previously. The location is an obvious one to steal from and PJ's boat was in a position whereby it could be "worked on" without being spotted. I suspect it is no co-incidence that a RIB was stolen from the boatyard down the river a couple of months earlier. It is also a reminder that it pays to be paranoid. I always think, if I were a thief the first place I would go is to a website like this one and then start learning where boats / engines etc. are.
  16. Alun, E-mail it to wchapman212@ntlworld.com and/or charlie@pbsbac.co.uk
  17. Close shave for MarineBoy. Almost lost her engine but the thieves appear to have been disturbed...... I take back my "Christchurch is not that bad" post !

Charlie, More than willing to help, although I suspect you probably have a better knowledge of marine wiring than I have

    Insurance

Gary, You will also find that Haven Knox Johnson are same insurers as www.boatinsure.co.uk who are Amlin plc. You can get insured with them online at the above site and I found the quote was exactly the same as I was quoted by a broker but I could then get a discount after one year. and dare I say it, they were cheaper for me than Craftinsure and also can be done online ( with instant cover ).
  21. Damn well missed that boat Bob ( we were too busy worrying about being told off for speeding ). We had a good day species hunting. Could have been better but there again it wasn't too bad ( time will tell ). Mark B found out that a light Orkney 520 doing near 20 knots through the chop on the ledge doesn't take too kindly to having yor crew member stand up suddenly. ( I presume this is due to the centre of gravity of the boat changing dramatically ) - it must have made amusing viewing from Splash Out alongside us !!! And thanks Bob for the water/squash which I needed desperately having left my 1/2 gall container of iced water at the slipway ( and which was not there when we got back either )

    Anchor

John, Hold off on the rope for now, I have more than I use of 12mm nylon ( I have a whole reel ) - so you are welcome to have some of this at cost price. ( I will get length and cost for you ).
  25. Bob, I think I will be going on Nipper with Mark B, not sure where he is launching from though ( I fancy Wick for a go at the mullet ). However, I could take Neo as well if Rich is back or if Nipper is not ready to go. Where do you want the worms collecting from ?
