Am now wondering whther Kams surname is Pythagoras ???
-
Anyone know what the rules are concerning rod/hook limits for this one please ? I couldn't find any reference to this in the blurb. Cheers Mark
-
Nice try Tom...but I reckon the cap fits you well
-
It was Scott, it was Scott, it was Scott.....weren't me....
-
Prepare for humiliation Anchor Monkey...
-
Cheers for that Gordon...it's got to start fishing sometime soon though right I've marked another couple of likely looking spots behind the Island....trying to locate those conger places mentioned on another thread...so perhaps we'll try there as our first and most Easterly marks.... Will tell y'all how little we catch after the event

Perhaps you could stick the soles from some unwanted shoes on top, pointing up of course, as this would make an ideal non-slip surface ???
-
Done that one...thanks Tom

Scott and I are bunking off work this Friday and were thinking of setting off to The Bridge, then slowly working our way back west, via some or all of the following : Clan McAvey Ledge, Xray Poole Patch Anyone think this a bad plan of action, if so what would you do instead ? And is anyone else equally free from work that day wanting to meet up on the water ?
-
Is it possible Martin that Scotts status be changed from Pout Catcher to Anchor Monkey, and stay that way no matter how many posts ?
-
Somehwat different reel, but I bought a job lot of ceramic bearings for my beach reels (Abu6500), and have two sets spare...will also have two sets of the standard stainless bearings spare too once I get round to removing them. So, if you've got a 6500 and want some replacements for nought then first come first served

I was told on me course that the group MMSI numbers are only a temporary thing that you have for a short period, like a few days or a week ???
-
So, done my VHF course, and reckon I could put out a Mayday or Pan-Pan relatively compentently (although I obviously hope not to have to), but how do I go about letting you lot I'm out there, and picking up on who else might be out there...??? First off I go to Channel 6, stick it on dual watch...then ... what to say ? Guess I'd rather make a numpty of myself here than "on air".... Cheers guys...

I've just bought the same chart, cost me

I did see a couple of boats, one looked like a charter so I guess the other was you Paul ! The sea was moving a bit much for my binos to be of any real use so couldn't get any close ups ! And yeah, once bitten, twice shy with the anchor...any chance of telling me where those holes are ?

Cheers guys, and thanks for the offer Charlie....I've learnt a few things the hard way by now and getting into Mitchells goes on that list ! Should really tell of Espadons inaugral fishing trip too... Started off at 8am from the yard, managed to get it out the yard with no problems and even out of Poole Harbour via the fuel barge with no problems, so far so good...we'd already noticed that the Force 1-2 "promised" by Metcheck had turned into a F3-4 according to the VHF, but undeterred we motored off to our first mark, against the tide, to the bank off Dancing Ledge....nothing but rocks showing on the fish finder but this was to be my first anchoring experience and I'm pleased to say it all went without a hitch. After a couple of fishless hours sat in a wind over tide situation we thought we'd use the tide to our advantage and get over to Christchurch Ledge....new Alderney ring put to it's first use and success first time ! Nothing to it thinks me....and the retrieval method certainly beat trying to pull it up by hand.... Motoring to the ledge in a fairly lumpy sea the boat was fantastic...very good seakeeping indeed and never felt unsafe even with the occasional tide rip and some decent waves getting us from all angles...we were making a good 14 knots until the windscreen wipers blew their fuse, and the spare, so down to about 8 knots and arrived on the ledge....lots of rocks, one OKish wrasse of 1.5lb ish and then a very very stuck anchor when we decided to move...this being a brand new anchor, with brand new chain and brand new rope I was a little depsondent at this point but after about 30 minutes of trying to free it it eventually gave...phew...note to self, set it up with the trip on it as clearly told elsewhere here Lastly tried a drift along Southbourne Rough (I think ?) from about Hengistury to Boscombe pier and managed possibly the smallest whiting I've ever caught....and that was it.... In summary (to echo someone else) Sea state : crap Fishing : crap But the boat was good, despite the wiper and anchor glitch...that'll all get sorted... Seems the first thing I need is some reliable marks think Im fully paid up now so do I get access to the inner sanctum ? Look forward to seeing some of you guys out there...and maybe once I've sussed my radio out I'll be a little more vocal on there...is Channel 6 the preferred one ? Thanks again guys...Mark.

Mines a 6.2 though !!!! 10kg was going on Toms recommendation (think my boat has a fair bit more weight than a 580).... If the concensus is that 7.5 will hold it, and onyone has a spare then please let me know !
-
I need an anchor - if anyone has a good 10kg one that is surplus to requirement ???

S'pose Tom will be expecting a similiar letter from me in the near future Perhaps we could start formulating it right here ? To whom it may concern... When I've managed to drag Tom away from the internet and in particular his fishing forums (which isn't often), then I've found him most able at polishing stainless steel. In particular rudders and propellors, a task which he can't seem to get enough of. In light of this can I please ask that you find as much of this sort of work as possible for him, and maybe also let him attend the "Antifouling with an Artists Brush" course that he's been banging on about so frequently. etc etc... Anyone wish to add ???
-
Can I put my name against that please ?
-
I have some pictures off a charter last year, with some nice bream and a nice undulate form that spot, and the charter boat is definitely at anchor. What sort of time you think of getting there ? I'll probably be out for some time on Saturday

Sounds like you could do with a read of my "Cordage" document Kam It really is most informative and its free.... Edited to show that we're really speaking the same language !!! This is the "official" RYA line...yes, Nylon because of it's shock absorbing qualities, and yes, braided/plaited nylon is best as it handles/coils/lays better....
-
Thanks Tom I wouldn't want you think me ungrateful !!! I hope you've got Martin to agree to buy you beer for a long time ? If not then I'm sure I can stretch to a round on Thursday
-
Surely this would be non-stretch Tom and not ideally suited to anchor warp ?
-
I'm just nearing the end of my RYA Dayskipper theory, and there's a whole section on "Cordage" i.e. ropes...a lot of this is aimed at the wind assisted sorts (WAFI I believe the correct terminology ) but there still useful info on the 3 main types of rope (Terylene, Nylon , Polyprop) and it's uses...sounds like you've got polyprop and should be using nylon, but if you'd like to see the chapter in full the PM me your email address and I'll forward it you as a pdf document. Of course the offer applies for anyone else who may be interested in this or any other part of the course.
