In the winter Graham and I changed the impellor on my old Mercury 75 2 stroke. The motor started and ran well after its winter break but then I realised that water wasn't only coming out of the pissport but in large volume out of the two large ports at the top of the leg. That's not supposed to happen is it? we did have some difficulty relocating the brass tube that takes the water up the leg and I'm thinking there is a fault here somewhere. All suggestions gratefully received.

Funniest thing I've ever seen!..

I know that bit of the learning curve!

Dave especial thanks to you! Last Wednesday hooky,I and my son went out . Fishing was generally rubbish although I had a good plaice supper out of it. The engine, seemingly understanding that it was up for sale/ scrap ran superbly all day. The multipin plug under the clam shell was found to be dirty at the end of our last trip. In fact it was the first time I'd ever found it. So it got cleaned..... It's still a bit slow to pick up the prime and I think a new squeeze pump and non return valve and service kit on the fuel pump might sharpen this but she ran like a clock . When I've found a cure for sea sickness I'll be completely sorted.

Got quite excited by the evinrude etec115 . Fortunately Hooky warned me to be wary. If you want to see a good scam follow the link.....it invites you to pass money to........andoutbords dot com. There's loads of signs....one careful lady owner.....unable to give landline number......need a quick sale hence unbelievable price.

Thank you both fort that. It's interesting that you don't think I'll get much of an improvement in fuel efficiency Rob. It has been suggested to me that the e tec engines would offer considerable improvements in economy especially if I size up asCharlie suggests. Anyway I'm warned not to found my desicion on savings I may not realise. My main motive for change is that for six years now I've been boating with this merc 75 and I now regard it with the respect usually afforded to a worthy adversary. .... I don't want to be beaten but.....As I crack one problem like old fuel or wrong oil, another seems to fill the gap like the dodgey fuse and intermiitent electrical failure.....I expect others have been here. Every time I start it outside my dairy door it runs like a clock but get it near salt water and it seems to pine. However it has always brouhght us home( except the time before last ) and with some straight forward servicing tips from club members I'd like to think I'll win.

Great answer Dave, thanks. She currently does 22/24 knts on the 75 flat out but it's thirsty ....2.8 miles/ gallon. Seems the etec 115 is well worth a look.

I'm looking out for something to upgrade my Garmin 178C for which I have no map card. Would this be a step up or is it the same thing?
-
I have a Garmin 178C which quite often loses its satellite and then goes for ages before reconnecting. Also we have no c?hart software for it and the chips are no longer in production. Does yours hold the satellite once it has found it or is it prone to abandon you mid channel like mine does.....also are charts still available for it.? Does anyone know if satellite problems like this can be overcome. If this could work better than what I've got I could be interested. Cheers

Thanks for your leads gentlemen. I value them all...the new etec won't go away so I'll research that further. That yammy is not far from here and would seem to be a good fit. Now those higher hp jobs Coddy......is that a tongue in cheek suggestion or would they match my 20 ft dory......there's a discussion to be had about performance and fuel economy in relation to power. Further to a conversation that I had with Coddy after the meeting on Thursday......I got home , cleaned the multi pin plug, ran the old merc up in a tub of water outside the dairy door and I couldn't get it to miss a beat. Good start ..enthusiastic steady idle. I'd like to overhaul the fuel in side of things and give it another go........but I am looking out. Question from this then is ... Pilot Dory (Wilson flyer type) 19' 6"". Bow to transom.....what motor is too small...what is too big....and what would goldilocks use?

Two boats , one sunny day, zero effort. (Some nice pictures ! )
Gummage replied to Hooky's topic in Catch Reports
So, that's how it was , completely and ably described in words and pictures by Hookey there! All I'd like to add is a big thank you to Alan for his generous hospitality and wide ranging advice. It covered ,passage out of Cobbs Quay, calling up the bridge on channel 12, Use of the two boat channels, how to contact the harbour master and chain ferry on 14 next time my engine resigns and leaves me gliding out the harbour on a strong ebb, the looe channel, secret marks which obviously I'm not going to tell you about because you all know them already, how to anchor on them, assessing wind and tide to set up a drift, how fishing baited feathers shows you where the fish are feeding........it goes on........I'm getting involved . You guys are helping me. Its a great club!- 2 replies

If you are talking about the breknell electro Samson in my experience they don't like getting wet . I cleaned mine a bit over enthusiastically with a wet cloth and the switch circuits went haywire and didn't recover. I read some online reviews and it seems a common cause of their demise. But hey, if you don't let water splash inside your boat they'll be fine!

I've watched that now. Wow what I've been missing out on! I'm glad to be part of keeping so many of your happy memories alive... Is the Internet made of electricity then?
