  1. thanks for the thread of humour running through the report Jack - when I read the title of your post my first thought was Oh good Jack's catching conger, rays and cod like everyone else now.............. unsure.gif

what ground were you fishing 7 miles off that was so bad you were getting snagged all the time? feel free to pm me the numbers as I am surprised - only area I can think of like that out there is the petrified forest area but that's pretty barren of fish.

don't understand how you let a fish get the better of you with 50lb braid - wasn't a spinning rod was it?

  2. Paul

Typically my cameras were elsewhere and I only had the phone!

This was made worse when I remembered the Trinity House competiton for the 2008 calendar and the conditions and lighting were perfect as we passed Anvil for a great shot- comp closes 31/1.........on the other hand carrying my decent gear on the boat in winter isn't norm either; even the p&s would hovever have done a better job with the eel!

Dave showed a neat trick to return it............open door and get it tail out; with very little encouragement it pulled itselt out backward and gone! Amazing to watch.

  3. Seeing the posts suggesting Sat might be a window I watched the forecast develop and called Dave ...........

Early start or night aboard (after a late arrival) was no contest so 6 saw me heading down the motorways

Cup of char from Dave and on to the boat; bit of a tidy up and remove the spare fresh water that had collected and of we went.

Heading out we called Maverick only to get Frank - politely reminding me of a change in boat and name rolleyes.gifrolleyes.gif Got the impression Frank was either concealing a red hot mark ... or it wasn't going that well at all unsure.gif We decided to have a little change for the winter and headed West!

Whilst fishing we heard a faint call for a Poole Bay Small Boat but although our response clearly ellicited a response we couldn't make out one word and, responding to that effect, heard nothing more. Anyone know who or what?

Anyhow apart from the great weather and crac we managed to tease out a few fish including this PB for me

A small eyed ray of 8lb 4oz did a great impression of a 30lb blond in over 2 knots of tide, an estimated 4lb bass hit 2 squid like an express train but couldn't really show it's best with 20oz of lead on it's nose............other (smaller) congers and dogs made up the rest of a fun day. The above conger was last cast as the tide slackened down (thank goodness) and kept the scales on the boat firmly over 46lb and a fair bit more at times.

I hope others took full advantage

  4. without wanting to belittle the fantastic work and Andy's committment but has anyone thought of approaching Jimmy Choo to sponsor the monthly comps in an effort to increase the number of members (permitted/encouraged/required!) to fish?

  5. I read somewhere that professional divers call these occurances 'Incident Pits' and that these domino affect deteriation of options are so common as to have their own official name. There is also something in Chaos mathamatics which proves there is a critical point with in a given circumstance at which things stand more chance of getting worse than of getting better.

    Mad Mike

indeed but it's more common sense than mathematics and happens to us all the time............once the proportion of your actions that are forced, or appear forced, increases beyond a certain point you are 'in the lap of the gods'. Interestingly the percertage is the same for professionals etc but, critically, they are still making decisions where others are being led by circumstances as things start to escalate................

  6. Inboard on a shaft wil probably work out about the same (near as damn it) as an outboard but an inboard with outdrive will cost considerably more to service. On the other hand an inboard on a shaft will give less performance than an inboard with a leg

indeed - it's horses for courses, swings and roundabouts etc etc

as ever you tend to hear about outdrive problems and expensive costs but never about the ones that run and run with routine maintenance. generally the 290 Volvo drives do well here, as do BIIs and Alpha's.

equally you pay about a 20% premium on fuel for shaft v duoprop drive in similar craft at planning speeds - which can add up

you also have a gearbox to maintain on a shaft

personally I would consider all the above about equal in the end - the real difference is in how the boat sit in the water under way and low speed handling. Not suggesting ones better just that here is where the real differences lie and choices should be based.

  7. oh goody it's developed into an anchoring thread rolleyes.gif

resisting the obvious temptations I will pick Mike (as always)

Or are you saying the ratio is not constant and that the greater the depth over say 60ft the ratio needs to be extended? I find that in 60 ft 3 to 1 is fine

it's actually the other way round Mike - as the depth increases the angle of pull exerted on the anchor by the rode can be maintained with a decreasing scope. In addition swell height, or even waves and wash, will deliver a lesser impact and require less contingency in your scope. Finally the height of your anchor roller to sea surface will be less significant (and most people talk/work around scope as a pure function of depth).

The last 2 are minor contributory factors - the first is quite significant; 3:1 in depth over 30m should work fine but may not hold in exactly the same conditions in 10m depth.

  8. I am somewhat surprised that they are issuing 'agreed value policies' on motorhomes; but this may be a function of specialised motorhome insurance I guess.

In any event on the road, unlike on the water still, the majority of the risk is represented by third party damage rather than the vehicle. In fact for most older vehicles the cost of recovery etc and scrapping can easily be higher than the payout to the insured - and that's a constant to vehicle value!

Oh - and it sounds to me Jack that you should tell thenm you haven't had a claim or fine on the boat over the last year and ask them for your

  9. One thing which should be born in mind when using braid, particularily the heavier BS stuff is that if you are stuck in the bottom, or in fact any other time, DO NOT wrap any around your finger / hand etc. It is quite capable of giving you a nasty injury, if not severing a finger or whatever.

good point Paul - we keep an 8" length of wooden broom handle lying around in the cockpit for exactly this reason - it's quick and easy to 'figure of 8' it onto an even quite taught line and get enough of a grip to take all the strain without actually being the cause of a break where you 'attach it' so that on balance the braid will fail at it's attachment to the bottom swivel or whatever and you don't loose the line!

  10. Please..Please. can anyone out there put me on to a programme similar to the fishing log,but where you enter the location;date;weather, etc and the fish you want to catch.and your PC takes care of all the rest

it's called a chartplotter Jack - does everything but bait the hook and haul the fish on many club boats (allegedly)

  11. I'm sort of with Jack on this one - I also find that dreams of fish yet to be caught are more satisfing than any (accurate) record of fish already landed!

Sadly I fish so little that I feel I have a sufficently accurate mental record of all decent catches already......... weep.gif

  12. well commercial priests are well documented and have well found roots in size shape and weight so I would suggest these as your starting point.

basically mini baseball bat with a slug of lead in the business end and a lanyard at the other...............

  13. before we leave spelling..........

ill let you all worry that i am dyslexic... though im not saying anything, as text talk is really conveniant, as long as it is very eazy (ez) to understand!

    See perfect spelling!!

I am sorry to hear you are ill
