  1. 'clean ship' tends to last on Phaeton until Dave hauls in his first doggy............. sad.gif

we use free fitted nylon cutting areas slotted into a varnished ply tray (made from an old dingy centreboard!) - the tray gets sluiced off and the boards a thorough scrubbing.

downside is it makes a crap filleting table because of the raised edges so we will be carrying a seperate board for that (apparantly and if Dave remembers it) in the future.............

  2. great idea - well presented.

personaly I would have sealed the ply with many coats off soething really tough like floor sealer then added the cutting section.

    overall 9 1/2 / 10! rolleyes.gif

I would have thought you would get a good few years out of it done this way

  3. OK re the hatch seal -

seals direct are a possibility if you can remove the existing one and send it to them or provide exact dimensions

alternatively the following was posted on another forum in relation to this issue - one of the reasons these seals start to leak is that they harden with age because the plasticiser bleeds out over the years. You can reclaim them however by removing the seal and soaking in a chemical to replace the plasticiser.

The chemical is available in camping shops its the stuff you use to waterproof tents (silicone waterproofing).

Soak the seal in the solution and place in an airtight bag for a few days and slowly the solution will absorb and the suppleness will return.

  4. Looking forward to the event, thoughts of fame spurred on by PaulJ's obvious efforts (and some sucess rolleyes.gif ) with sponsors and prizes - so I thought I would do a little planning in order to increase what littel chance of success we might have on the day.

Looking at the comp diary I see it shows a midday tide but also says Neaps; whilst most of the other comps showing Neaps list morning tides.

Not having a tide table to hand I am struggling to relate these to the size of tide we can expect (and therefore where we might fish and for what).

Are they a really small tide?

  5. and less shelter than an Orkney 440 with a canvas dodger - believe me! (this of course ignores the option to pop downstairs to a centrally heater/aircon moderated cabin etc etc.............)

overall useless for fishing even taking into account the 'fishing platform' stuck on the back!

  6. Cranchi Z34 2x D4 260's

here's the same boat making mincemeat of a SW 5 over tide out west a month ago. I was able to make about 15 knots accross from Weymouth that day - no more.

It ran from Weymouth to the Hamble in 2 hours (right up to Mercury Marina).........then round to Chatham the next day.

    Fantastic hull IMO

conditions Sunday were a good test of everything including the wet weather gear!

  7. hehe understand the need to get out there............totally fed up with tiling (amongst other things) I called a boat buddy who wanted to test his waterproofs.............

ran out of the Medway and it was blowing the flags - er shredding the flags - horizontally and definitely looked good for a testing session.

ran down the river and was surprised to see so many fishing boats in the upper reaches - supose it's their equiilent to the harbour for us!

ran out past the mongomery looking for something to test the boat but it handled everything beautifully

felt sorry for the sailboats tacking up through the entrance at Sherness - striaght into the wind, but with the tide, 3 reefs, no 3 and still overcanvassed............. sad.gif

we waved as we passed at 35 knots but they didn't wave back

later we passed the fishing boats taking the tide back up too - they had all had enough!

give me my HT anyday - this thing could take the conditions but as an open boat the rain in the eyes at an apparant 60 knots wasn;t funny at all............. ph34r.gif

  8. never had a problem with fingers using a fixed spool to uptide Alun........

found it really usefull fishing of Deal and the Thames estuary but generally we were fishing 30ft of water and by getting the bait well uptide I didn't have too much pump and wind to get fish in. Also it was always whiting or cod (odd pout)

tend to be fishing much deeper water off Poole and whilst I still use 10oz grip leads in 70-80ft the multiplier comes into it's own when 'playing' some of the possible hook ups (rays and conger usually!)

I used a cheap reel at the time - ryobi I think - it did the job. Still have the rod, custom built on a new firms blank at the time 'Conoflex' - my how they have come on!

  9. agreed but this boat was out on a mooring with a fair haul back in the tender so I can understand the issue.

I stopped leaving anything more valuable than a lifejacket on board after a couple of breakins but then I am on a pontoon and can get the car near the boat. real pain in the neck but even overnight I do it.

    ouch......................

  11. Mike - good luck I suspect all the work will have been worthwhile..

Re mooring you may well find Rockley are pretty cheap over the winter if you are keeping the boat in the water to use, but yes the prices for next summer are starting to reflect demand............don't rule out Dolphin Haven (or whatever it;s called!) for a small boat in the winter season it can work out really economical proving you use the boat a fair bit. See Sam's info thread about a month ago.

  12. going to completely agree with Kam ( biggrin.gif ) but

Weed fouling will be low anyway in the winter months
    - the water is pretty much at it's hottest at the moment. OK it will cool gradually but he's only in for a bit. It will foul but a quick blow over every 2 weeks should keep it clean
  13. thanks for taking the time to post here Steve - however much we believe we understand what's happening on boats it's great to get it directly from those directly involved.

on the difficultlies for the cskipper with crews who demand to be able to 'bag up' I was pleasantly surprised when he winked and suggested that not all drifts were likely to be as productive! Not having thought about it in that way before when he then went on to explain how that meant that the anglers that actively returned fish usually ended up hooking up with many many more fish............... rolleyes.gif

keep up the good work - and I have added flounder floats to the tackle box for next year too....................
