  1. the argument that 'They are doing it for a living' is irrelevant. The whole crisis in fisheries is due to the influence of big business behind commercial fishing exerting pressure on governments to allow them to continue their unsustainable activities purely for profit in the short term.

I am not in favour of bag limits until commercial activity is brought under proper control because as has been mentioned elsewhere it is laughable for a recreational angler to be fishing near a commercial and putting back the few fish he catches as he watches boxes being filled on the commercial boat. Our catches are a drop in the ocean compared to the miles of tangle nets inshore and the factory fishing offshore.

I would be happy to accept a bag limit at the same time as restrictions to conserve and RESTORE fish stocks are implemented both inshore and offshore.

  2. I have just seen this regarding proposed bag limits that will probably be introduced in Alderney.

    and specifically

6.Charter fishing vessels, that are not Registered Sea Fishing Vessels, should have a bag limit restricting the catching of Ray, Turbot and Brill to two fish (not per species) in total per person per day to protect stocks. This would require legislation to be introduced under a States of Alderney Sea Fishing Ordinance.

7.All charter fishing vessels to carry log books which can be inspected.  This is to ensure that recommendation number 6 is complied with. This would require legislation to be introduced under a States of Alderney Sea Fishing Ordinance.

8.A restriction on the landing on Alderney of more than two fish per person from charter vessels that are not Registered Sea Fishing Vessels.

I don't know if private vessels are included in this

Many here submitted to the consultation process around this.

The bit you seem to have missed is "At present the professional fishermen are required to keep records of their catches which are submitted to Guernsey Sea Fisheries. No record is kept of what fish are caught by charter anglers or amateur anglers. It is felt that it would be impractical to require or indeed

  3. you need to be more precise

I have no problem with an 'annual bag limit' applied to the boat at all - I have huge problems with one based on a day, or trip etc

My reasoning is that the latter has absolutely no impact on conservation as a whole.

Then you have the question of whether it applies to the craft or the person?

Finally you would have the ridiculous situation of recreational netting and discards etc

  4. to me our choices are simple -

either we as a club undertake to provide statistically valid data relating to small boat anglers or we will be lumped together with the rest of the RSA sector and the existing pre-conceptions will remain unchallenged.

the key part of this is that as a group we make a larger overall contribution to GB plc per fish taken than any other - by a scary factor (my one problem with the survey would be SWMBO seeing the actual costs associated with running a small boat for angling!)

I have taken, and eaten, 1 mackerel and 1 plaice in the last 2 years, against estimated costs of

  5. having spent a fair amount of time reviewing the various interested parties, and a quick chat with a well known to the the club charter skipper, I have drawn a different conclusion to Martin (but then again I've only had 2 glasses of red and 5 Stellas)

however, my conclusion is that it's an opportunity for the club rather than there being any value in individual contribution.

the club represents (or has membership of) a wide range of primarily sport fishermen who spend a lot of money each year on their chosen pastime.

we have one of the best communication vehicles, and are passionate about our sport

whether we liase direct with one of the stakeholders as a represenative sample or just let it pass by is the choice

finally, we do not believe that the perception of our activities matches reality

(but I'm not suggesting it would be simple)

I didn't originally post because this should be in Club Talk - but the OP is a forum member

  6. A lot of people would suggest the Evenrude ETEC with its 3 year before needing a service warranty.

They are also a bit lighter than the equiverlant 4-stroke

Most moden engines these days are good, it is the after sales that I would suggest you look at, who can service it, where and costs.

    Good hunting

Thanks for your thoughts, I'm lucky in Lymington in that we have most dealers and servicers locally. I'm guessing that in terms of litres per hour they are all much the same....

as long as they are DFI they will be

I have been very impressed with the Suzuki DF series around that size when I have been on boats.

The ETEC's are peerless in the 50-90 range but at 115 they all seem to produce excellent engines - but they aren't all the same underlying capacity or even cylinders (unless I am out of date - which isn't to be ruled out!)

having said that I have only had Merc units myself and, touch wood, never missed a beat on any of them.

It's the sort of purchase where manufacturers do clear models from time to time and you may find a good value option crops up.

  7. Having run back from Weymouth this morning, even with wind and tide together I wouldn't have wanted to anchor West of Swanage and when the tide changed it was only going to get a lot worse.

Bluntly, the larger boats would have had a very unfair advantage tomorrow - before the other issues get considered.

Looks a balanced decision to me.

  8. We are considering the removal of the "Silver Eel" from the list of available species due to the decline in numbers and it is listed as "Critically Endangered" by IUCN and like the UNDulate a UKBAP proirity Species.

The Undulate is listed by IUCN as "Endangered".

    Thoughts?

    Thanks

    Rob

UKBAP is a Government initative: UK Biodiversity Action Plan

IUCN is International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources

I don't think you have much choice Rob!

    "Eel and shad

You must return any eel (Anguilla anguilla*) or Allis or Twaite shad you catch from any water in England and Wales.

This includes estuaries and inshore waters, to a distance of six nautical miles."

  9. I would drift - more comfotable and covers a greater area - the chum trail stays with you.

surely it's all going to be a matter of the wind/tide relationship?

ideally you would drift with a light NE or SW (either with or against the tide) but may need to anchor with NW or SE to stay connected to your chum line at all!

anyway - I'm sure you will work it all out on the day, and look forward to seeing the pictures...

  10. having just got back from Yarmouth I assume that today's airshow was either delayed or canceled - worst visibility I have been in for 'just rain'! Could just make out the shadows of a couple of navy vessels (?) off Bournemouth , amongst the thunder and lightening!

have to head back now the weather is improving - typical.

  11. I towed by boat down in 2000, and have been there (Poole) ever since - previously based in Medway Bridge Marina for a few years fishing as yourself.

Your choice of where to launch and stay will be based on budget - it's that simple. On a tight budget it will be launching at 0600h - but even then keeping the boat/trailer overnight isn't easy.

  12. Well not suprisingly you have annoyed me, As A retired Lifeboat Helm/mechanic of 15yrs I can assure you that whilst some form of ''gps'' is not essential it is there as plotter or whatever with the advantage this gives This ''Gung ho'' attitude has caused me and my colegues long days and nights in the past pulling ill equiped ''navigators'' out of the oggin, (allways I might add, full of excuses) Derek,V. mad.gifweep.gifhuh.gif

I knew I could rely on you - just didn't know when!

I hesitated to raise the DSC safety aspect because it would also be good if people had the slightest understanding of what an emergency is, let alone how to communicate it! On balance it's hard to argue against the simplicity of the red button (it's made me a lot more comfortable to be out with a younger crew when trying to explain what to do if I have an accident).

I've never had sat-nav in any of my cars (not a budgetary thing) but I have 5 on Phaeton, with 3 having dedicated charting software, switchable battery power to 4 and plug and batteries to the other (waterproof) unit. The paper charts are my back up - but then again (like many older members) I was crossing the channel (Chatham - Ostend isn't a short route!) before GPS existed, and the same applied to my private and RAF flying.

On the other hand I would swear that Dave could accurately navigate around club waters with his nose and 10ft visibility! I remember vividly an argument about the need for a compass - why he used to ask? If you can anchor you can establish which way is which from the tidal flow - or wait until you see a pot buoy (they have some uses!) - but you don't even need that because the relationship between the wind and tide in our area is so fixed you can tell NE and SW from just looking the sea...what he really loved was radar; no 1 nav aid in his view.

  13. I am going to probably annoy a few people here but here goes anyway.

    ...................................................

    Paul

If I understood what you were actually saying I might be annoyed, but then again I might not.

I take an inference that your view is that the use of a GPS isn't 'real navigation', but I'll park that one in the same folder as 'boats without sails aren't real boats' and move on.

The course referred to above includes chart-work and basic navigation skills (designed mainly around planning, DR and coastal work (such as calculating speed in coastal waters from charted elements and angles etc) - if anything it is generally recognised that it doesn't cover the use of GPS/Plotters sufficiently (you will probably get a glib 'don't enter the rock/buoy as your waypoint!' but it's getting better.

I have to add that I find it strange that you suggest downloading apps to a delicate battery powered electronic device as a back-up to anything - in the context of your other observations. Back-ups should be robust and guaranteed to work when you need them; this tends to mean simple and un-powered, devices - candles & flint/steel (torch with spare batteries and bulb is more normal), lead-line, spare chart and compass spring to mind.

  14. just about anything can destroy an alloy prop very easily!

personally I got fed up after the 2nd one (meaty one on a 90) got trashed by a nylon bailing strap - and switched to SS .

whilst changing the prop on an OB with the boat in the water is one of those 'just about manageable when everything goes right and the sea state is flat calm!' tasks, I don't like those odds.

otoh experience tells me that you can just bend the mangled blades until they snap off and run back pretty efficiently on almost the hub alone ie even 1" of blade root will give good drive.

the argument against SS as 'hitting something may damage the gearbox' just doesn't stack up for me - running back any distance with an off balance damaged alloy one is even more likely to cause damage to my mind - and SS ones will take a lot of abuse, especially shallow running in sand and shale which just polishes them (yes I know the water pump suffers ...but that's a different issue)

  15. Had one like this some while ago, they got short shrift. Very persistant though. The had a connection with an online company selling virus control programmes.

    Terry.

this ones very specific Terry - your computer has sent a Microsoft Error Report and we are Microsoft and will sort out it's problems for you online; please go to this website and we will be able to fix it for you..........as Rob has said.

    ?

simply hours and hours of fun (for those that have the time)

the planing hull can almost match the displacement one in displacement mode - but then again I don't' tend to run on the open sea at 5 knots rolleyes.gif

Charlie's post is pretty much spot on - you really need regular company to make sense of a larger boat (that's not just economical sense). The other thing is that you need to use it regularly to both cut down on the maintenance costs (surprisingly to some!) and to also make sense of the fixed costs such as storage/mooring.

Since I lost my crew I have hardly used Phaeton - so much so I am seriously thinking of mothballing at my sister's place, or moving it to Greece for use a few times a year as a runabout or some such silly plan.....
