  1. Phaeton's Sunday tale was remarkably similar.............. having got a fishing pass this weekend I teamed up with Dave. As we left Corall's fuel berth Pal o mine came under the bridge next to us so we waved - but got little response.......... and they headed off as we stopped briefly at Dolphin Haven to thank someone for their hospitality on Friday night. Caught them up at Old Harry and thought we would see them off Peveril catching maccy - but they went inshore obviously after better fayre! drifted Durlston with joeys but no show so moved on to St Alban's - great tide running on the flood, but not good to run all the way into the overfalls at it's peak. Dave had a couple of takes hooking one fish that ran just over 4lb. At this point we discovered that I hadn't put the landing net back on after the little cruise - which proved interesting later on! Anyhow it got handed in and Dave's smile was still there many hours later! As the drift speed was falling to 1.9knots we thought about a run over to join in at Weymouth but decided the conditions weren't going to improve when the ebb started so popped ourselves on the reef just off Chapmans Pool for the last of the flood giving us wind with apparant tide as it's an eddy! Dave managed a thorny, a 2lb 10oz bream and lost a honey monster of some sort (smile slipped briefly). As the tide eased we ran to URAY (our XRAY for undulates!) for the slack and start of the flood - straight into fish with Dave leading the way again with a fish of 12lb and I managed one pushing 14lb (both returned for next time). the run back was a little sloppy but once in the harbor the dual function of the livewell feed as a deck wash proved great and left only a quick splash over with fresh water to complete the job (apart from the screens). great day out in the sun all round
  2. Rich, I have been using a 6 inch hook length of 30lb pike wire on all my tope, ray, conger, cod etc traces for 2 years now and whilst I can't definitively say it hasn't put off any fish anecdotally it wouldn't appear to have done so. re spinning - some seem to; some don't! sounds as though you had a good trip out - I am looking forward to an opportunity for a proper day's fishing again sometime; looks like we are off to Alderney adn Guernsey again next week if the weather permits but I'm going to hide some proper tackle on board somewhere this time round!

    Tues...

Sounds like a great days fishing Alun, and quite a long one too..... someone's going to hit a monster bass soon I think with all the effort being put in!
  4. there are quite a lot of comments on these adn similar boats back in the history of this forum. if you start with this thread here and follow up on the links posted in it you will get a lot of info on the warrior but there is no substitute for looking back over all the posts under boat talk - when in Boat Talk change the default setting to give you all threads from the beginning and take it from there.
  5. Come on Sam - use minnow rods ...............
  6. took advantage of the weather window, and neap tides to run over to Alderney and then on to Guernsey and Sark. Went over Thursday morning and returned direct from Guernsey arriving early Saturday afternoon to that rather unpleasant squall ( ) as usual fishing wasn't high on the agenda but I managed a nice hour around some rocky outcrops off Sark in the dingy with the fly rod one afternoon - nowt interested in my meagre offerings. managed some turbot and brill - but only in the Riva restraunt St Peter Port overall the scenery, both above water and on the sounder, looked fantastic and I am looking forward to a proper fishing trip over some time.
  7. it's posts like thi sthat aren't going to make you many friends' amongst those sweating away in town.............. having been in Poole for the last 10 days I managed 10 minutes fishing in total a couple of nice fish though....................
  8. interesting that it fishes in the summer too - had a couple of discussions with people at the time and the suggestion was that it didn't.......... going to be pretty busy there this winter ..... having had that red letter day with a 15lb + cod, blond and conger on consecutive drops last winter there I'm happy it holds fish! like all good featured ground you have to be pretty accurately positioned to the feature you are fishing too.
  9. Homer's been off line for 2 days - Noooooooooooooooo...........
  10. beer can - what beer can? I was looking to see if she had her reel fully spooled...........
  11. Paul, are you retriving the stormy's quickly through the water or trying to keep them near the bottom by going a bit slower and constantly dropping back?
  12. someone mention sole at Barton?
  13. John I tend to agree that they would be hard pushed to be able to confirm that you had been using the leisure batteries for cranking but they might just! Generally even a quite small dedicated starter battery will have the CCA you need to start and, if it's only used for that andkept topped up will last a long time - equally if the leisure batteries are only used as designed they will give many years. Having you leisure services battery available for starting in the event of a problem is another thing, and recommended.
  14. No trailer? - where's your sense of adventure! Seriously if you do trail it really is usefull to have such a chart loaded - having spent 6 years with small fast boats out of the Medway there is no comparison with the fun you can have in Poole, Plymouth, around the Solent etc on your boat - and the fishing's a lot more varied too.
  15. Sheddy, Welcome Firstly if you want that unit then you can get it at 486 inc vat and postage here Whilst I understand and generally agree with my learned friends regarding screen size (it is important) I would also agree that more colours and pixels (even on a smaller screen) is even better - add CSTN for daylight viewing, less money..........enter the Garmin 172C - 256 colour / 320x320 pixels v the 182C's 16 colour / 320x234 all a 100 less at the same place - gets you the chart in your budget. However I would get the best of both worlds and get the Lowrance 3500C - 5" screen, 480x480 pixels, 256 colours and. same link, around 380 inc postage. Small Navionics chart 5G227S will do the whole of the Thames Estuary up past the Blackwater I think - or the 25G will cover you from Brest and the Scilies to Hamburg if you get around a bit.............. Anyhow - your money and boat. Good Luck
  16. Now now............ Notice I didn't ask how many mackerel PaulJ had on his hook this time........I believe it is the right thing for crew to use large smelly baits - preferably that they bring themselves too!
  17. lol @ Adam turned out phototo be a lesserspotted small eyed ray..........but as they had already done the ID maybe just a slip of the pen or, you never know around here, a play on an earlier thread.......... expecting kam to shortly turn up with a 280lb tope and jack (eventually?) to report an 18lb whiting........
  18. Nice fish, great photo's and a good call Paul.
  19. there's no legal requirement to have a measure of speed on board at all Brian, however there is to comply with harbour regulations! in practice they aren't going to prosecute anyone near the limit on speed alone, and if measuring speeds tricky imagine the submission for excessive wake!!! the regulations are there to enable PHC to 'police' and maintain safety in the harbour environment - they have plenty of real targets to go at and if you are keeping a sharp lookout you will spt them if tey decide to target you and dropping back to 8 knots or so will usually see them head of somewhere else (from what I have seen recently).
  20. Managed to slip a rod on board despite steely looks.......... ran out from Poole in glorious sunshine and had a lovely run across Poole Bay. Called up Blue Warrior to see how many were out in the comp as we passed Christchurch Ledge but got no response (probably as Adam was out with Jimbob?) so assumed there were enough and continued to Yarmouth for lunch rather than argue the benefits of an hours fishing with the better half........... Lunch was super, great Moules and the beer was ice cold.... Great run back late afternoon - almost didn't regret not fishing glad everyone had a good day out too
  21. Jack, We seem to either - 1. Lip hook (top and exit through nostril) with a single large gape strong hook 2. As for 1 but with a fixed pennel and the lower hook is hooked through the flank of the fish (and kept well loose ie it's not holding the mackerel to your line) 3. Pike rig of pennel trebles as for 2 I notice from some fishing programmes that in America they hook the livebaits through the back just in front of the dorsal fin with a single hook when targetting fish who swallow the livebaits whole - I haven't tried that here.
  22. What with all the family boating days I hope the comp on Sunday is still well supported..........can't somehow see James missing it though!

thanks - excellent offshore pack and price; coastal seems closer to market (walk into Piplers and get off shelf) cost when postage taken into account.
