Phaeton is a Faeton Moraga 780 HT

Jim, Try getting yourself a piece of red plastic to cover the screen then adjust the brightness of the screen until you can see through it but no glare or loss of night vision. enjoy the crab!

ah Jack Jack.......... Google? perfectly good search engine on here m8! Portland rig and details here When the tides running hard then a long trace/snood is great - when it's slack it's a liability especially with something alive on the end! sorry for the abrieviation - poker game was getting a bit warm!!!!!!!!!!! good fishing
-
helicopter or portland rig snood length to tide - shorter slacker yes to mackerel no to slowing the drift
-
John, Tides aren't going to be that different to Kimmeredge! 10 mins maybe unless you are moving right out off the coast - say 7 miles + Re actual numbers - well if you look closely at some recent tope pictures you can tell where they are! However nobody will ever give me any more precise numbers on the grounds that the fish are all over out there! I just get rays all the time........
-
at least I admitted I was expecting tope........... mind you 30lb pike style wire snoods and smallish circlish hooks can take anything........

Having swapped Friday for Tue/Wed next week I wasn't best pleased when the forecast picked up somewhat................ However, as others Dave adn I finally got of the berth around 1645h and headed out. Tide was still ebbing when we came round to ballard so we tried a drift for bream without success. Picking up mackerel at Peveril we headed due South a few miles past Anvil with the sea calming as we moved out of the influence of the headlands. Ended up with 2 rays on the very last of the ebb run to mackerel baits intended for tope.............. Both fish weighted less than they looked and were a little thin for their size - both struggled to fit the net (well Dave made a song and dance about it anyway so I had better get a bigger net soon) but came up at 13 lb 8oz for the blonde and 12 lb 8oz for the undulate. Slack showed nothing and we quit at teh flood really got going and the sun disappeared........... Back on the berth at 1045h with the wind starting to freshen............... Cleaned boat and went home today...... having chucked a pound of rag and my sense of humour firmly over the side in frustration of this wind. Role on 2 weeks time...............

flog the tank and get a new one with a tomahtsu fitting..................the only other option that was open to you (replace the male end on the new engines fuel pipe with a mercury one) is no longer sensible. csomeone here will want a merc one surely.....
-
i'm seriously thinking about Friday too - may swap around a bit with days the following week. don't have anything planned, including crew!, as yet - not an early start but probably a reasonably late finish - ie coming back in after low tide as the flood allows to Rockley if conditions really good, and Lulworth ranges not fireing, probably head West. decision point tonight as I have meetings all day Thursday halfway to the boat........
-
Unfortunately I too won't be able to fish. Not having JIMBOB's ability to integrate (new) life with fishing priorities I will have the family with me and, if the weather is decent, will be out there somewhere but without any gear (well might try and sneak a fly rod or small spinning rod on baord..... ) I will be listening out when on board though so if anyone has a problem I can help with let me know - always wanted to tow a Warrior like a ringo!

Hey James - love the way you have planned the arrival to miss your fishing diary! Kam - would never plan to be out for the full 48hrs as the fridge isn't big enough....... seriously I plan to go with the flow; if we get a windless weekend of sunshine then I might well do exactly that, possibly popping back into Swanage Weymouth Yarmouth or wherever. However I realise that this is likely to be impractical (from a fuel perspective mainly ?) for many. For me overnighting in Swanage saves me 3 hours of motoring (mainly through Poole Harbour) and another 2 clearing the boat then setting it up again - I don't leave any marine or fishing gear aboard. However it does mean finding someone who is flexible through the weekend too. Adam - looks like we will have a nice mid tide over the 48hr, with the tide flooding through to midday. This would be pretty perfect for boats to launch / slip moorings at first light on the last of the ebb and runout on either Sat or Sun.
-
a rather dangerous and misleading comment I feel. but lets not get into a detailed discussion regarding the COLREGS ........... If you can get by without actually steaming into them (or endangering your, or any other, craft of course) it's for the best.
-
Adam, Absolutely no idea - but in a 48hr window there must be something fishable! The comments re flood tide have been echoed elsewhere so heading out on the ebb, when I never catch much anyway, maybe fishing a wreck out that way on the slack then drifting the rips through the flood and reverse the process back in would seem to be in order - breaks the trip up a bit too. When was the last time a cod featured in the 48hr comp results? All the above assumes we are not hopping around looking for shelter the whole weekend of course!
-
Glad you got out Jack, sounds like the call off was the right thing for everyone! Rough seas do seem to break up schoal fish like mackeral, sprats etc, and the very coloured water also has an effect - in the case of inshore conger a positive one as they seem to be happier to feed in the gloom. Kite surfers in that channel could be a nightmare! Recent discussions in the US seem to be taking the view that they are craft as defined by the COLREGS but I can see a local byelaw banning them from that channel happening pretty quick if there are incidents (and there will be I am afraid).

So - that's the 29th Burnham match, 5th Bream comp, 10/11 48 hr Specimen and the 18/19th rips weekend.................. Don't know how you guys do it! If the weather is right I may well runout to the rips on the 10/11 to suit the tide but I am probably going to have to miss the 5th if I want any chance of that weekend now. Happy to go in company oif that suits anyone else - let me know nearer the time.

At 14mm you certainly shouldn't have any strength probs Coddy, and at that diameter it shouldn't tangle in the way that the 10mm always seems to!
-
cant even get cheap diesel now m8
-
I am unreservedly with Jack here..............
-
shouldn't be too bad around Lymington and snug to the western edges on the flood but might well kick up a nasty short chop on the ebb.

Kam, pretty much due south on the 19's I believe, show on the charts and plotter. as PH entrance is on the 39 that gives 20 nm or so here's a chart (maybe!) - should be able to see the area on it (now marked with red circle). After clicking on the thumbnail click on the arrows box that appears bottom right of the image to expand further

coincidentially my ruff estimate, inc 20% contingency, would be 18 gallons (90l!) however I would have thought with a spare 2 x 5 gallon carry on cans you would be well covered, alternatively 1 can and a buddy boat. The reason for the can is that if you did run out it's good to be able to put some in the tank for when you get back into the harbour (on a tow) - saves a lot of hassle (and embarassed looks!)
-
Nice link Kam Bob - we don't need a group number you just need to code all PBSBAC boats MMSI numbers to a Group in your set. This gives you 1 in your list 2 doesn't work easily because although you could create a text based message to send to the craft as I undestand it you would be using a standard channel for subsequent 'discussion' IF 1 then the answer to 3 is likely to be the Swash! More practical will be using 1 to call and find out who's out then, depending on responses, you can issue a subsequent position request to someone (as opposed to them explaining where they are in code, by mobile call, or just plain badly!) and then programme the on screen response into your plotter and you get range and bearing "just like that"..... It will make a huge difference, and I suspect we will get pretty proficient in it's use quite quickly given the number of users. All we need now is the weather!

Rockley reckons to have been fully booked for that weekend through the following for months; and that will include the camping part. They don't do nightly either - would be about 350 for the minimum weekend sleeping 6. Last year the camp site just of the roundabout - A31/A350 was fully booked as an example too. However it might be worth contacting them as they could keep the boats with them there. Contact etc here

Having the event in the half term week I am afraid you will find this a bit of a problem - realise that's not helpfull but being realistic........... tents in someone's back garden?
