  1. Chucking my 2p in I would have thought you will be able to enjoy the occassional trip offshore as crew and, more importantly, get to use your own as often as you want in the wonderfull inshore waters.

I wouldn't compromise on launching / running costs and fishability therefore -

or to put it anotherway if I were buying you a retirement present it would be a 520/580? orkney with about a 40 hp 4 stroke motor and a bit of shelter........

up untill a couple of weeks ago when was the last trip to the rips by the warrior brigade?

  2. Yep Swanage went out in the big boat to tow in Narwall II from the West, about 30 foot 'motor sailor' looking at her in tow. We were sitting in Swanage watching the maroons go up etc - think they just wanted a run out! Given the number of craft in the vicinity, and the fact that it had sails etc it continues to surprise me that they launch a LB.

Glad they found the MOB, single hander just out of Alderney from the search quadrant given. Seemed unusual for Solent CG to be coordinating the CI SAR and French resources though - was this because they took the call from the yachts that called it in? Impressed with the way they talked the other guys through their timings and course changes to calculate the apropriate quadrant for the search aircraft. Guy must have been in the water a fair time as well so good to hear he was OK.

Paul - I didn't get it as a Mayday alert either.

  3. Echo this John's a great guy.

He was round in Swanage in his old converted (barely) lifeboat last summer.

His trick, if it is a trick, is only to deal in products he knows and has in stock.

And if you want to talk to anyone about image intensifiers or night sights he's your man!

  4. Martin your economy will be a function of the DFI but even more it will be because off the throttle setting/revs you cruise at relative to the exponetial fuel/rev curve of all these engines. If you run over 5000 rpm you will suffer with everyone else!

My consumption would have been hit by the swell going out like many, and the fact that the hull and drive could do with a really good clean despite antifouling.... sad.gif horrible drag. Cost me around 15% on consumption... mad.gif

  5. So who is heading out to the rips this weekend ?

Similar height of tide, floods through the afternoon so no need for silly start times, and a better forecast than last week!

or is everyone working out how much fuel adn anchor line they would need for the hurd deeps??? huh.gif

  6. We must have passed you sometime Friday night as we ran in past Dancing ledge at dusk, from the Sky, over Evan's Rock and into the harbour..........

Were you on a buoy where the North and Main channels divide?

  7. Kam - that I agree. More than one comment on how much winding etc Having a reasonably fast retrieve rate on your reel helped!

Funily enough though no one ever complained about having to wind a fish up that distance!

  8. more importantly what the hell was 2lb of lead being used for? bashing them on the head????? sad.gif

sympathise re fish guts - I ended up using the scouring side of the sponge and will pay the price in due course by having to repolish the whole damm boat to get rid of the tiny scratches

  9. Alun - I can let you have the numbers for the edges of both banks we fished but not until v late Friday night (if required for early Sat) or Sat morning if not needed 'till Sunday! Other may have access to the numbers before then!

With regard to colours how did others score? We certainly found that a bright orangy pink shad outfished the white (0 fish) or mackerel coloured (1 take 0 fish) both on the rips and on the Sky Friday evening. We didn't try worms or eel rubbers on either. If I could only take one colour it would be orange and probably the 6" version. The cod we caught coughed up a scad of about 6-7 inches.

Re running out again - I will struggle to get a pass but might manage a very early run one Sunday morning ie back by 1100h. I would definitely want to have the livebait well rigged next time too.

  10. Yes a god day for engine usage all round.

We set a new record on Phaeton logging 10.6 engine hours! Much of that was of course drifting but it's still a lot. Estimate 80 miles covered and 90 litres of fuel used........... sad.gif
