  1. Nice to see catch and release in action. All seem to have survived having hooks pulled out and have lived to get hooks in them again. Should be publicised to the antis!!! Petesnr
  2. Have had two incidents with hooks past the barb. One was a 3/0 straight in the thumb. it was an old trace tangled with the anchor rope and I was left with the weight of the anchor and chain holding the hook into my digit. Decided against the five hours at A and E so got the mole grips on the hook and tried to pull directly out but could not pull hard enough as thumb just moved with grips as I pulled. In the end I got crew to hold my thumb and with one almighty wrench I tore it out. For ten minutes afterwards I regretted being alive but survived the experience. Second incident involved a shrimp rig hook in the hand of youngster who came out with his dad one evening last year. I explained that we would have to go to hospital and the lad said no he wanted to remain out fishing so I the suggested that his dad pulled it out. The youngster said no way to his dad but could I do it? I was not keen as you can imagine but eventually I pushed the hook against its bend to increase the size of the hole and it came straight out with a sharp pull. The lad was as good as gold and I havent been sued yet. Petesnr
  3. Still ten years to go before life begins so plenty of time to practice!! Have a good one. Petesnr
  4. No easy answers. Some one who fishes once or twice a year for turbot might feel justified in taking any fish over the Minimum Landing Size and it's difficult to find a good reason to stop them. It depends also on an angler's reasons for going fishing--is it to fill the freezer or for sport? Most of us probably have a bit of both motivations. My worry has always been that with both commercial and recreational fishermen we might end up with a situation where there are more fish in the freezer than in the sea. Bluefin tuna certainly seem to be heading that way! As I've said before, in my view, if you have your own set of marks that produce for you then it is in your own interest to return fish so that you have continued sport. In the past some charter skippers were known for fishing each mark to death before moving onto the next. This is all very well but with the number of boats fishing the inshore marks there is pressure to find new ones and is this a desirable tactic anyway? Those of us who go out regularly can afford to take only the amount of fish we need for immediate consumption--there is no need to fill the freezer as fresh fish will be available on the next trip. if we are to avoid being drawn into major restrictions on our activities we do need to get away from being purely an extractive activity and to actively promote responsible utilisation of the marine resource. Again it comes back to stocks--if these were properly managed with the aim of increasing rather than just maintaining the present low population levels then recreational anglers might look more favourably at bag limits, catch and release areas and much bigger size limits. Roll on Utopia. Petesnr
  5. Belated Happy Birthday Tony. you are catching me up! Hope you had a good one and are not suffering too much today! Petesnr
  6. Keep taking the tablets Rob--you're obviously eating too much meat! Petesnr
  7. Problematic isnt it! It appears to me that switching from one species to another does not address the basic problem that our fisheries are unsustainable at the current population levels. What is needed is restoration of stock levels so that cod stocks or whatever species we prefer to eat are not adversely affected by commercial exploitation. And if the stock is not damaged by commercial activity it follows that recreational activity will have no effect at all. At the current stock levels there probably are some places where intense charter angling is a factor which should never be the case with a healthy stock. Pout is nice and the bigger the better but how long before there are only tiddlers left? I also take Duncan's point about pout being in a mixed fishery and providing food for cod etc. Bottom line is no simple answer without letting stock levels rise. Petesnr

  9. Hi All I'd just like to post a big thanks to all of those present at Thursday's meeting who sponsored me. 17 of us slept out in on the gravel in the middle of the Nothe Fort at Weymouth to raise funds for projects in Dorset run by the Charity I work for. (Alabare). We have just opened two houses for veterans of the armed forces in Weymouth and these will benefit from your generosity. Incidentally there was frost on the outside of my sleeping bag in the morning and it was certainly a spooky place to have an hour on watch between 4 and 5am. I wandered around and did have goose bumps a couple of times as I passed inky black doorways.... One of the others swore she had seen movement when she was on duty...... I must go back in daylight to have a better look around. Thanks again Petesnr

  11. Sorry wont fit my car or trailer. Petesnr
  12. Will check my trailer in daylight and let you know. Petesnr
  13. Could be just a slight change of angle on the transom mounted transducer will transform performance. Remember when you get onto the plane your bow is higher so the transducer starts to point forward rather than downwards. It's more likely to be turbulence causing air bubbles around the transducer--it might not be set deep enough. Never had a problem even with basic fishfinders that couldn't be solved by simple adjustment. Good luck. Petesnr
  14. Wonder why you would need to go to the lengths of removing the powerhead. If it aint broke dont fix it--yammys are pretty reliable. Petesnr
  15. Ours was a quiet meeting at Owermoigne--I don't think that there were any commercial boys there but the recreational sector had some big guns. Mike Ladle, Dave Cooling and Malcolm Brindle of the BASS Club were bending the ears of the presenters after the meeting. Recreational Angling hardly got a mention during the slide shows which considering the level of participation in the sport is puzzling. The time scale of plannig is also worrying--projected as 10 years from now. Incidentally I parked my car in the village and found the village hall on foot up a lane. When I came out it was inky dark and I stumbled into bushes twice on the way back to the car. Either the tea was spiked or was it a case of the blind leading the blind......................? Petesnr
  16. Thanks for the offer Stuie but due to uncertainty over my movements (no not my bowel) I'd better make my own way there. As I'm not sure who you are I'll wear a pink carnation or a club fleece! Cheers Petesnr
  17. Us older men are like old wine---corked and sour as vinegar!! Have a great day. Petesnr

  21. Sorry lads but'Quite interesting' doesnt seem to be an appropriate title for this thread. Go fishing or something...... Petesnr
  22. Depends how they are preserved. Some used to be in formalin, used for preserving corpses, strong smelling and definitely a turn off for fish if not toxic. Have caught plenty of fish on salted slipper limpet. Used to collect off beach, empty the flesh from shells onto newspaper then pack in screw top jars alternating layers of limpet with layers of salt--a much under-rated bait. Lug can also be salted after gutting. Petesnr
  23. Got a lad who might fit the bill. He fits the person description is highly computer literate, reliable, CRB checked and available mid February due to end of government work experience scheme. I can thoroughly recommend him but he doesnt fish! Petesnr
  24. I am sure we'd all be willing to pay if we had exclusive access to stocks with bailiffs patrolling at all hours of day and night, restocking programmes and fines and confiscation for those infringing the rules........................I'd better dream on!! Petesnr
  25. Have you got the numbers for the pike marks?? Petesnr
