  1. Once had a similar occurence losing ugly stick and tld10. When I went to tackle shop to remonstrate over breakage of rod holder was quietly advised that reels have drags and these should be set so that this does not happen!! They did replce the holder but I have never trusted it since. P
  2. The response to the video is meaningless in terms of taking our position further. I am sorry that I can't believe in the brave new world of impassioned individuals lobbying their MP's. Individual response to government on an emotive issue such as Article 47 has been brilliant on this occasion but how many will continue to write in?--eventually you need people who can attend meetings and not just sit in front of a screen--you can't do it without a representative body. That is not just my opinion it is a fact. If we are just a collection of individuals and Defra asks for a representative who are you going to send? And how are you going to choose? We can't wait for this situation to arise and then flounder around looking for somebody to be our spokesman. If Angling Trust fails us it will be a self fulfilling prophesy brought about by anglers not being prepared to support a single campaign. This is the story of the last years. Incidentally I don't take it personally but if I don't represent the clubs views then the membership need to find someone who does because I have been hammering away on conservation's behalf for too many years to change now and when I was elected it was made clear that the poison chalice was mine to get on with in my own way--which I have done. Peter
  3. I am happy to agree to disagree with anyone but I am still mystified as to the identity of the people who are going to represent us if we don't like the present incumbents. Nothing I have read has put forward an alternative (apart from doing nothing!) to the representation we have at present. And if my views are so unrepresentative of the membership I am only too happy to pass the reins to some-one who does reflect the opinion of the 'informed majority'. Please queue up! I am quite happy to just go fishing. What is abundantly clear is that the hot air on a forum does nothing to further the cause of the 'hobby angler' unless it puts forward some positive proposals for the engagement with those who must be obeyed rather than slagging off the poor devils who have made government aware of the our concerns. They would be only too happy to bring in fresh blood so perhaps some of those with strong views could join up and get into a real rather than virtual battle. If anybody does fancy the job of Conservation Officer just call PJ.
  4. I'd love to know where the "informed majority" get their opinion from. If it is from a subtitled rant from the Nazis I rest my case!
  5. I'm not fooled at all and I would not dare suggest that any struggle is over but living with the paranoia of conspiracy theory is negative and self-defeating. I just have the certainty of history that engagement is the only way forward and frivolity on a forum is fun but will achieve nothing. Only by having representation and reasoned argument is any progress possible. I still firmly believe that action and legislation at European level is the only way that international fish stocks such as bass, cod and mackerel will survive in any quantity. Incidentally if the EU did bring in rules to curb recreational fishing as opposed to recreational angling then inshore, lightline fun fishing might improve dramatically and shore angling would be a viable alternative when it is too rough offshore..............I am dreaming now. I'm still waiting for anyone to suggest how else anglers might be represented if organisations such as the Angling Trust are so unrepresentative of sea anglers views as to be counterproductive. Personally this thread sent me straight to my chequebook and I signed up because the extreme of sentiment expressed on this forum, however lightheartedly intended stinks of ignorance, entrenchment and a willingness to sit back, do nothing then wait and say "I told you so"
  6. Nice one fellas but if you read some of the other strands you will realise that we have been recognised and assured that we will not be subject to quotas by the top man in Europe so perhaps it is time to stop blaming those who have stuck their heads above the parapet for us lot. They listened to the voices of anglers and were greeted by a deafening silence when it came to anything but whinging. Tight lines Peter
  7. Speech 10/02/2009 by Jo Borg Head of EU Fisheries Commission "The most famous words contained in our proposal must be the words 'recreational fishing'. In some Member States our proposals in this regard have been misinterpreted alarming citizens that the Commission wants to start controlling millions of hobby anglers and impose quota restrictions on them. THIS WOULD OBVIOUSLY BE A CRAZY THING TO DO AND IT IS THEREFORE NOT OUR INTENTION TO IMPLEMENT SUCH A LUDICROUS SYSTEM. Let me make it clear once and for all that the hobby angler who catches a few kilos of fish every time he goes out fishing and uses it for private consumption will not be covered by the control regulation even if he catches fish such as cod which is under a recovery plan." From the horses mouth! He goes on to say that there are recreational fishing methods (presumably tangle nets etc.) that do have an effect on stocks and these will be targeted. Peter

  9. Clear as Poole Harbour mud! The suggestion from Chris Holloway at the PDSA meeting was designed to 'catch out' those who return with boxes of fish (but say they are fishing for their own use i.e. recreational fishing which would include unlicensed netters) by having a local byelaw to limit bag size for all recreational fishing of certain species. It is an attempt to move from a position of being victims of decisions made by the faceless ones to being pro-active in taking some action that might help local fish stocks. In that respect I admire his viewpoint as he would actually be supporting those who fish legally whether recreational or commercial. Whether it would get support from the SSFC is debatable but he argues that engagement with the committee is far more likely to have positive, long term outcomes that sitting in our clubs and moaning about how we are being 'done down' all the time. It was quite clear at the meeting with the deputy fisheries officer that despite all our discussions and our angling press the local Sea Fishery Committee is pretty much out of touch with the recreational sea angler's aspirations and thoughts. The most important point is that we need to tell these people what we think, not at a raucous public meeting but sitting down around the table with some positve proposals--the nature of these proposals need to be agreed by discussion within angling clubs and forums. Peter
  10. All the very best Bob. Having a checkered career myself in recent years I can only say that a man with your qualities and talents should be able to find a niche--just keep an open mind. Peter
  11. Happy Birthday Martin, Hope your boating year is less frustrating than the last. Peter
  12. Good Luck Martin! peter
  13. Just two points chaps. Firstly if you don't join the Angling Trust who are you expecting to represent you in discussions with government? ( Not Steve Coppello thats for sure!). If we have no representation we will get exactly what we deserve from future fisheries regulations--absolutely nothing! This alternative is too bleak to contemplate so the past needs to be put behind us and we need to unite. If anyone has a viable alternative then I would like to hear it. Secondly on a more positive note it does appear that pressure from individuals and our much reviled representatives there is to be a review of the idea that we should be subject to quotas. Peter
  14. Thanks for your kind wishes. Life begins at 39 (again) and I am looking forward to the year's fishing with the same enthusiasm as I did when I first held a fishing rod at the age of 7. Cheers Peter
  15. I have 3 batteries. 2 charge off the engine and the third is topped up by a solar panel and runs the electronics with the option of switching in to the other 2 if the solar panel has failed to keep it up. The batteries are all Halfords with the 3rd battery being a leisure battery--no problems in last 3 years but have replaced batteries regularly in the past. I switch off sounder and plotter at anchor and use handheld for transmitting. Having said all that I bet the next time I go out they'll all be flat.........! Pete Also take handheld gps with many of my waypoints in it.

    Boat Talk

the changes are significant if you use buoys as waypoints but otherwise the old charts are just as useful and wont cost you the update. I use the the middle of channels as waypoints for in and out of Poole so the positions of man made objects is less relevant. Peter

    bag limits

A little man will sit in his patrol boat in the harbour entrance and board your craft to examine your catch. They have these powers.

    bag limits

Under heavy sedation after last nights meeting. Could not keep my cool. Without going into too much detail apparently the demise of the plaice and dabs between the piers and Southbourne is 'due to them having swum somewhere else' unquote. He would not discuss the 12metre rule due to court action impending. When questioned he said 'whats wrong with bag limits?' 'nothing', I replied, 'within the framework of a fishery management plan where proper size limits and limits on commercial catches are also in place' He could not see that limiting one section of the catchers whilst not another did not constitute management. I asked for the evidence backing up the suggested by-law and he said that it was a nationwide problem that unlicensed boats were landing and selling bass. I asked why the existing laws on buying and selling fish could not be invoked and he replied that it was not their responsibility but that of the MFA who were taking no action on small infringements despite SSFC passing on receipts etc. The general feeling of the meeting was the majority would be punished for the crime of a few and that there would be no benefit to the recreational sector from any of the proposals. The question about grandfather rights was brought up and he said that he would look into the specific case mentioned but added that no-one had informed them of the relevant information--as if the people concerned would!! He did say that the number of grandfather rights boats had diminished from 40something to 11 and that the desire of the fishery officer was to get rid of them all (and beam trawling). If anyone would like to chat about the meeting please call me. Peter

    bag limits

You know me-- calm, even tempered, docile, non-confrontational, no strong opinions, no axe to grind over conservation. I shall be there tonight representing the views expressed in Martin's post. Bag limits can only be used as a management measure within the context of an overall plan to improve/sustain the stock. Any measures targeted at one group of exploiters is not fishery management but is discriminatory, vindictive and divisive. The purpose of the fishery committee is to manage the fishery and this by-law is not an effective tool for management in my view. Peter
  20. The deputy Fisheries Officer from the Southern Sea Fishery Committee will be at an Open meeting at the Broadstone Conservative Club next Thursday 20th November from7.30pm. All are welcome to come to listen to him and ask him questions. If anyone would like a question asked but can't make it then please post it and I'll endeavour to ask it on your behalf. Peter
  21. My experience over the last 45 years is that nothing has changed. As a kid I witnessed boxes of undersized bass being loaded into lorries at Ferrybridge near Weymouth. The miracle is that there are any left at all. I'm sure that there are more anglo saxons engaged in this kind of activity than foreigners and that their catches are bigger than theirs. They just dont choose to get caught on camera! The problem is always going to be enforcement and until that is addressed I'm afraid it will be business as usual. I resent the thread of racism and would remind members that the majority of people plundering the seas in our territories are English and proud of it. Peter
  22. Managed to get out and had quite an interesting day. My tally was 1 garfish 1 red gurnard 10 bass (all small) 4 mackerel (all jumbos, caught on the bottom) 1 dogfish 1 grey mullet 1 brill (1.5lbs) Cant find the score sheet so will have to rely on Paul (please!) Peter
  23. Will be out there for comp on Whistler with my usual crew (non member). Peter
  24. Tony and I will be out on Serenity--somewhere depending on weather. Peter
