Well done Lofty, I had a try out from Southborne on Saturday but the wind was stronger than forecast and I could only manage an hour before heading back in! Phil V

Thanks Lofty - it's in my diary. Fingers crossed for some good weather!!

Hi All, Wife and kids away all weekend so I thought I'd give southbourne a try tomorrow evening. I plan to drift the flood down to the ledge and try to pick up some mackerel before looking for a bass. It will be my first time down at Southbourne. If any one would like to join me they're very welcome; also any tips greatfully received. Will also be going out somewhere on saturday. The harbour for plaice perhaps? Phil

Lofty, Was down that way a couple of weeks ago though I didn't take the yak due to the high winds. There is a good spot just outside the harbour were a lot of commercials hand line for mackerel. You should bag up there. It is a short paddle to the left of the harbour by the rocky headland. There must be some bass there I would have thought. Just watch the tides though. Have a look at Anglersafloat. I asked the same question about St Just which is just down the coast and got some good advice. Sennen cove is worth a look in the right conditions. There is a slipway there and across the bay there is a small rocky island that looked really bassy. Again, you'll need to be careful about the wind/tides. Have a great time, Phil

Hi Lofty, Usually I freeline live maccy with a circle hook or treble hook attached through the nose. I quite enjoy using a large float to keep the maccy down or you could use a small bullet (1oz) with a long flowing trace. Out of interest, how will you be keeping the maccy alive? I have a trolling bait bucket which is okay for sandells or small pout but too small for maccy. I've been meaning to try some live baiting off southbourne myself for a while now so will be interested to see how you get on. I have had some success of Peveril but you need to get the tides just right. Phil

Finally managed to get the yak out for the first time in ages on Sunday. Slipped in at Evening Hill at first light and tried a couple of drifts near to Aunt Betty buoy for the last hour of the flood and while it was nice and quiet. No joy there and as there was a bit more traffic making its way out (in search of bream I guess) I moved a bit further down channel sticking to the edges. I finally picked up a small plaice on my last drift on the half ebb and packed in at 1030 to spend the rest of the day with the kids. All in all a cracking morning, the weather was beautiful!! Lets hope there's plenty more to come! Phil V

Hi All, I have recently managed to convince the missus that it was a good idea to buy a kayak after giving up my boat a couple of years ago (shortly after child number 2 arrived). I have some experience of bass fishing from boat and shore in the dorset area and would like to have a crack at bassing off christchurch/soutbourne. Could anyone please give me some advice on the practicalities of fishing the ledge from a kayak? I plan to get some live bait and paddle out from soutbourne. I would normally drift the ledge when in a boat, but obviously that would be exhausting in a kayak, so will plan to tie on to a pot bouy and ledger my live bait. I'm not after any trade secrets or 'hot marks' just some general advice would really be appreciated. Many thanks. Phil V

Zed, I quite like the idea of giving Kayak fishing a try myself. There is a good thread in the forum of anglersnet.co.uk with local contributions. I'm going to pop down to Bournemouth canoes in Hamworthy to have a chat when I get back from working away next week. Just need to find someone willing to let me have a go before I seriously consider buying one. Phil

Zed, On a recent trip to the states I seem to recall that they sold Abu reels in Walmart, so it may be worth waiting till you get there. Be careful though cos before you know it you will be loading up your trolley when you see the prices over there. Walmart also stocks the spiderwire braid which is much cheaper than over here. Phil

Hi all, I will be returning back to Poole shortly after a working away with the Royal Navy for a while. I sold my boat earlier in the year with a view to buying a new one, however, with a new child on the way this may have to be put on hold. I am looking for any opportunities to crew, in particular, my father in law will be visiting for the next two weeks and will be desperate to get out. So if you are able to take two anytime from Sun 9 Aug - 24 Aug we would be delighted to help share the load. Many thanks and hope to meet some of you at the September meeting, Phil V

Thanks for the welcome, unfortunately I am away at the moment on HMS Illustrious visiting London for the November ceremonies (not sure if you can fish at Greenwich bouys) but wish you all well for the comp. I'm back in a couple of weeks and am hoping to have my first flounder bash of the season soon. Phil

Thought that now I have finally managed to get down to a club meeting (nice to get to talk to some of you) and paid my dues I would introduce myself. I've owned a couple of boats over the past ten years or so and currently own a Pilot 590 which I launch from The Hard at Hamworthy. I'm hoping to sell this soon and upgrade with a friend to something a bit newer (a Raider looks favourite at the moment). I've fished for years with limited success but have been restricted to Poole Harbour and the Bay. I hope to be able to start trying further afield with the new boat and hopefully I can benefit from all the expertise that is out there. I'll be delighted to other up any space I have to other members when I am out but I have to juggle the pressures of work and family commitments which limit my opportunities. Look forward to meeting more of you in the near furture. Phil Vivian

I am currently on the search for a new (or nearly new) boat which I will be sharing with a pal mainly for fishing in Poole Bay and occassionally taking out the missus. We will probably put the boat on a dry rack and want to keep the option of launching ourselves. Having spent many hours searching the web and reading reviews I have narrowed it down to one of the following options: Warrior 165, Predator 160, Explorer elite, endeavour, Alaska 500 or Raider 16/18. This is still quite a large choice and I will be looking at a Predator shortly which is favourably priced. Does anyone have any views to add that might help with our deliberations? As you can imagine there is a bewildering amount of choice out there and all these boats seem quite similar? Many thanks, Phil V

I currently own what I believe is a Pilot 590 which I am looking to sell shortly as I am looking for a new boat. The boat has a 90 HP Mercury 2 stroke engine, an auxiliary 3.3 and is on a trailer at my house in Poole. If this interests your contact then let me know and I can give you more details. Phil V
