  3. Hi Rich (S), Thanks mate, you have solved a mystery for me. 2 trips ago I went out to Utopia from Chichester and coming back into the harbour, very busy at the time, the engine stalled. A quick check over and I found that the vent on the fuel tank was closed. I was sure I had opened it that morning. The round trip had used a full (25L) tank. Oh and what engine???? a Yamaha 30hp on an Orrkney 520!! Sounds like you have identified a small problem, easily remedied though, thankfully. Cheers for the tip, I shall be opening the vent all the way in future. Gary.
  4. Hi Adam, She's looking good. Somehow feels like YOUR boat once you get the name on, doesn't she. Congrats, Gary
  5. Thanks Newboy. Gary
  6. Hi Guys, I regularly (well, as regularly as weather allows) fish out of Littlehampton and Chichester on my fully equipped Orkney 520. My Son now works weekends and so I am looking for anyone living in my area who wants to accompany me on fishing trips. Someone living close would be ideal and we would share costs of bait, fuel, parking etc. If interested, drop me an email to garytorbuck@hotmail.com and we'll meet up over a pint. Regards, Gary.
  7. Hi Newboy, You are absolutely correct and that is exactly what I pointed out to them, but the reply (from Lowrance) was that just because a unit is new that does not mean it will not need any updates. I replied saying that I found this difficult to believe as surely a function as simple as speed should be working on a basic GPS let alone a
  8. Hi Guys, Just thought I would share my recent experience in dealing with Silva. Purchased a Lowrance 3500 for my Orkney 520 last October. I have only had the chance to use it twice since then but could not get the ground speed to show on the unit. The closing speed shows OK but despite following the booklet to the letter, I could not get the ground speed to stop showing 2 flashing 00's. I contacted Lowrance and the dealer and both suggetsted that I needed to purchase suitable equipment to download an update, despite the unit being brand new and this function never having worked. However, a quick call to the distributors and they offered to do the download for me. I posted the unit on Monday and received it back on Wednesday! Not bad eh! from one end of the country to the other. Good to see that service is still alive and kicking (sometimes) Gary
  9. Hi Paul, Glad you got that sorted. Orkney are particular about the support reqiured for thier boats so you were wise to check. I am pleased to be able to stick with the un-braked Orkney trailer for my 520, mainly due to the low (no) maintenance sealed bearings and no brakes. Mind you, as you know you have to bear in mind that in an emergency brake situation, there is 750ks pushing you up the ar.. Regards, Gary
  10. Hi Tom, Interesting question this..... As you say, trailing would be possible but the vehicle and slipway requirements are bound to limit where you would tow her, the whole point of being trailerable. I live in Worthing and towed Dreamcatcher down to Plymouth to fish the 'Eddystone Lighthouse', easy with my Orkney 520, but a boat of this size needs a bit more planning before a 200 mile trip and a decent 4x4. My guess is that boats of this size are best moored and fished from a port, so I am going to opt for No 1. Oh and I agree with Adam that a stern drive would be better suited. Gary
  11. Hi Guys, Seems a few manufacturers are shying away from the enormous cost of shows, Orkney are not going to London either. Gary.
  12. Hi Fred, So which one of those screens do you get BBC1 on then?? She looks fantastic! Gary
  13. Hi Guys, Units now sold. Cheers, Gary

    Orkney 520

Hi Guys, Just thought I would chuck my comments into the ring. I have owned my Orkney 520 since Feb 2003. She is a great boat handling well in all seas that I will ever voluntarily encounter, providing you ease off the speed if it's choppy, but then I'm no speed demon so no problem. I have the Yamaha 30hp 4 stroke too and it's a brilliant engine. It's quiet, smooth and frugal and has never given me a problem. Since owning her I have fitted side rails, roof grab handles, rear seat cushions and a bespoke bait board over the transom, in order to keep more deck area clear when fishing 3 up. I have just upgraded the electronics but the weather has stopped me playing with my new toys. I did have a problem with water collecting under the floor (via the transom well) but Orkney took her in 3 times until resolved, at no charge and out of warranty.....Good service eh. Interesting to hear the earlier comment about the positives of joining a club. My Son now works weekends so I end up scratching around for crew.....solution, join a local club. Yes, in theory, but finding a good one with vacancies is not so easy. I would love to join PBSBAC but feel that living in Worthing it's a bit far!!! Anyway, good luck if you choose the 520, you won't be dissapointed. Oh and don't forget the major advantage with the Orkney (Dixon Bate Rapide) trailer....no brakes and sealed bearings, Fantastic! Cheers, Gary

    Insurance

Hi Guys, Insurance is always a bit of a minefield. At the end of the day, anyone insuring needs to get as many quotes as possible, compare cover and then make your choice. Cheers, Gary.

    Insurance

Hi John, You may be sorted by now but I found Haven Knox Johnston to offer me the best deal. One insurer even excluded damage under the waterline!!!! Check the exclusions on the policy carefully and make sure you have 2 or 3
  18. Hi Guys, I am currently removing a Furuno GP32 gps and Garmin 160 F/finder from my Orkney 520. These units are approx 3 years old and in excellent condition. They have always been removed from the boat and wiped down after each trip. I have manuals for both. Assuming all wiring and aerials etc are available (i have asked the dealer to carefully remove all) I will be selling them for
  19. Hi Paul, I have a 520 with the Yamaha 30 hp 4 stroke and in the 3 years I have had the boat she has been fantastic. The engine is smooth, quiet and economical. Flat out on a calm day with 2 on board she has achieved 21knts. Normal cruising is 12-16knts. However, at the back of my mind I seem to remeber Orkney stating that the maximum engine rating is 35HP. Might be worth contacting them first just to be on the safe side. Give them a ring on 01243 551456. If you do go for the Yamaha I don't think you will be dissapointed. Cheers, Gary
  20. Hi Guys, We always wear a bouyancy aid in summer and a floatation suit in winter. I made it a rule of my boat that nobody steps aboard without one. Gary.
  21. Hi Newboy, Can't tell you what's biting around here as every time I plan a trip the bloody weather puts pay to it.... Damm eh! Hi Paul D, I can comfortably cruise on a good day at 18knts but have had 22 knts on a flat calm day. That's with 2 on board. Gary.
  22. Hi Paul D, All registered now mate to hold up the Orkney corner with you! Gary
  23. Hi Guys, Thanks for your welcome notes. How you doin' Dave S? Just a few lines about myself. I fish from Chichester or Littlehampton in my 2 year old Orkney 520, a boat I have been very happy with. She has a Yamaha 25hp 4 stroke with Garmin 160 Fishfinder, Furuno GP32 gps and Icom 401 vhf, and sits on the Orkney trailer (a great bit of kit). Cheers for now, Gary
