  1. I have a similar thing on my Samurai (Warrior hull). It simply the additional lift of the tabs at the stern. I use the power trim on the engine to lift the nose to get the bow up to the ideal angle. Mad Mike
  2. I was only quoting the RYA and RNLI, I guess they know what they are talking about. As for a bucket I think that would create too much drag and break its handle. A sea anchor or droge is the ideal thing. The RYA advice is based on what a day sailer might have aboard that could be of use in an emergancy. In any event a towed warp will only be in the first 3 or 4 foot of water any snag it encountered would have taken the bottom of the boat out about 30 seconds earlier. As for pot markers I guess I am assuming that the helmsman has enough about him to keep clear of them anyway. It's always easy to do the "Ah but what about...." stuff when someone offers some advice based on not a few years of building, owning and using small boats. Perhaps those with more up to date expertise could Volunteer their knowledge as well. Mad Mike
  3. A fine bow entry coupled with a broad stern are the hull features that engender broaching in a power boat. The other big factor is too much speed. In the sort of conditions that most of us go fishing in, the likely hood of a steep and clapotic sea unexpectedly knocking the Stern round is slight. IMO with the amount of power available to us with modern engines coupled with the wider stern sectioned day fisher type of hull belting along over a following sea of any size raises the possibility of a broach to quite a dodgy percent. Where as keeping steerage way and steadily plodding through a nasty following sea is much safer. Indeed if the following sea is very bad trailing a very long (100ft) loop of warp tied to between the two stearn cleats is recommended by the RYA & RNLI as a method of keeping the stern from skidding round . 4. Quote.....Yes, any engine could potentially start if enough combustible material is present At last some one who knows what he is talking about! Mad Mike
  5. Half as likely but still a possibility. Mad Mike
  6. What's the effort? You would be foolish to try and turn the prop with the engine still capable of firing as a cylinder went over TDC. It is very hard to turn the engine over via the prop without taking the plugs out anyway. I just don't get what you two are on about so I'll leave you to it. Mad Mike
  7. You'll have fixed several O/B's gear adjustments then Duncan? You do it your way, I'll do it my way. Mad Mike
  8. Cor blimey some people!! You put something like a length of stiff wire down a plug hole until it touches a piston head, rotate in gear until BDC is reached then attempt to get neutral by gear shift on the cabel control. Any movement on the wire when the prop is rotated will show that the prop is not in neutral Doh! Mad Mike
  9. With the plugs out there is very little resistance. Mad Mike
  10. think I would start my investigation with the engine off and turning the prop by hand to see if it's in out of gear from time to time when indicating neutral......... Yes but TAKE THE PLUGS OUT!!!! Not only is it easyer to turn the engine via the prop, but less harmful if the little bugger sparkes and fires up for a split second. The odds are you will cure it by adjustment to the cable end of the FNR leaver. Mad MIke
  11. Frightening story I have one of those set ups that lock all the car doors from access from outside the car within 5 seconds of moving off. I think your story is a caution to all of us. In this day and age keep your doors locked when inside your car . mad Mike
  12. I am sure we will be down to have several looks at your boats Tom before the deed is done. Mad Mike
  13. Just out of interest, why are you upgrading? Well Mark my co owner has some money he wants to put into the boat and although we both love the Samurai we would prefer something with a cabin as we have been caught out in the rain and spray a bit this last year. We would still stick to a O/B power though as the weight of a diesel would mean having to hava a 4X4 as said, and for the odd occasions we would need to tow the cost is not justified. Moving to a mooring would mean we would use the boat more as we would not have the hassle of trailing in and out for a 3 hour evening trip. Mark looked at the Jeanneau at the S'oton boat show and was a bit underwhelmed by the finish, but very impressed by the Quicksilver. When the money looks to be a lot nearer I dare say we will be climbing over anything that floats before writing the cheque. Mike
  14. There's a possibility that we will be upgrading to a Quicksilver 580 or 630 next year. What opinions on these boats are there out there? We would still want to launch and recover ourselves but there is the possibility we might berth it a Cobbs too. Mad Mike
  15. , I will post pics for you.. Thank you. Mad Mike

  21. I agree with Duncan, that's why I asked the question. But then I didn't want to say it wouldnt work 'cos some one would be bound to argue the point. But now it's been opened up I don't think your idea will work. Niether should you try and alter the transom unless you REALLY know what your doing, as the stress forces involved in moving the prop thrust through to the hull are huge. Turning the engine to the side when fully tilted up is the usual method of solving this problem. Mad Mike
