Trev November started with 60lb and 6/0 pennels then after dropping a couple and lost conger upped to 100lb and 8/0 sukumas .Lost fish number dropped apart from when I was to keen or they started mouthing the baits and I thought it was just doggies but I'm sure we've all been guilty of that.Hopefully got out of Xmas shopping so out sunday, more than willing to give a certain type of rig a go,just let me know. One I'm going to try is a pennel but with a double apposed bottom 8/0,so 3 hooks .......if that makes sense

Thanks Nige.... Appreciate the input and good luck..

I'll give my results as soon as the're in.

Just to add one thing to this thread.Don't be afraid about leaving loads of hook showing, cod are not hook shy they are use to eating sharp food like hardback crabs, lobsters, clams, limpets etc.Give bites plenty of time to develope and don't strike, just take up the slack line and lift into the fish,if you don't hook it drop the bait straight back to the bottom and most times it will return.Good luck for the weekend it would be nice to see a club member with a right wacker(35lb plus),see you offshore Nige.

With my limited experience and frail nature I was not inclined to offer my version of the "cod rig" for fear of ridicule ..... wink.gif

However .....with Trev's cry for input .... and realising I have only caught one this year BUT not dropped any !! I thought you might like to know wink.gif

Pennel rig for cod.......Djhh style is............ rolleyes.gif

70 lb clear mono.....length depending on conditions ( swell and tide) 15" to 30" To keep the bait Nailed to the bottom.

On the bottom.........6/0 O'shaunessy eye tied with a 4 turn tucked clinch knot and 1/4" tag left

Penneled hook has been loose but with line through from the front and a couple of turns of the line to "fix" at time of baiting ( can be " fixed " in any orientation to suit my bait.)

I slide a muppet down the line ( I use a bait needle to thread this so I have some control where it starts on the trace at least )That's one muppet on the rig and one muppet holding the rod (got that one in b4 any one else !!)

Bait is min 2 and up to 4 small 8" squid

Same as last year and had 4 .... dropped none tongue.gif
