Newboy
Have seen on ebay ppl selling preserved lug, rag, squid, sandeels etc..... No refrigeration required it says on the description, anyone used them and are they any good? Thinking of taking a packet or 2 for my summer holiday where bait is very difficult to come by. petesnr
Depends how they are preserved. Some used to be in formalin, used for preserving corpses, strong smelling and definitely a turn off for fish if not toxic. Have caught plenty of fish on salted slipper limpet. Used to collect off beach, empty the flesh from shells onto newspaper then pack in screw top jars alternating layers of limpet with layers of salt--a much under-rated bait. Lug can also be salted after gutting. Petesnr
Newboy
Thank you, Peter, I may try salting away some for the holiday.
biggcol
Before you salt your lug lay them on several layers of news paper and then prick each one several times with a baiting needle( or similar tool) then let the water drain out. Put them on fresh dry paper and salt each one, they will shrink up and go fairly hard (shut up Jim!!). Then wrap them in fresh dry news paper rolling them into 10's just like Black lug. They will keep quite some time like this or you can freeze them. You can cast this bait as hard as you like without blasting them up the beach. Good luck Colin
