LiveBaiter
Hola from Spain. Thought I'd post a report on our mega trailaway - to Southern Spain! 24 hour ferry from portsmouth to Bilbao - then a 600 mile drive from Bilbao to Mojacar. Great fun and 12 hours driving through the night was a breeze - not a hitch with the trailer - excuse the pun! As soon as we arrived, there was some to and fro with fishing licenses and stuff, and then we finally got onto the water. water temp 26 degrees centigrade. My first observation is that there is a huge swell in the Med - the long, rolling sort of swell that makes the crew sea sick! So, first couple of days did very little fishing - just some messing about with the kids water skiing and ringos etc. Second observation is that the water is v v deep - where we are you get 200m within a mile offshore. Because of windy weather and the swell, we hadnt been able to venture more than about a mile out. So we'd picked up loads of small stuff, various species I couldn't hope to identify, but nothing more than 6 inches long. If anyones interested I can take some pics of the weird and wondeful species out here and you can all test your marine knowledge by telling me what they all are. (shame they don't count in the species comp!) With all the small stuff we were getting a little fed up, and starting to think trailering the boat down here was a bit of a waste of time. Anyway, today, things imporved. We managed to get offshore, and did some trollling with paravanes. Here is the result What I presume is a barracuda? Anyway, the locals seemed pretty impressed. The only thing is that I'm not sure whether we can eat it - its sat on ice waiting for an answer! I have caught barracuda in the carribean before, and been told not to eat it because of some sort of parasite or poison it carries. So I'm off to the fish mongers later to find out!. Anyway, must get back to the Cerveca - if we get anything else of interest, i'll post up details. Hasta la Vista Toby
Graham Nash
Superb Toby. I have no idea what it is or if you can eat it but who cares when you are fishing in bright sunshine with 26deg water!!
plaicemat
Does Mojacar fit in the due south of our territory? Don't know as I haven't checked on a map; worth checking, perhaps. Certainly in Cuba they eat barracuda with relish but maybe the Med ones are different. Terry.
Rob
Nice one Toby!! Congrats on your success. A detailed writeup of all the loops you jumped through would be a great help to other members on your return!! Enjoy the weather and cold beer!
