bassncodformeplease
Had a bit of trouble with my eng last sunday, have asked at mercury dealer and they seem to think coil packs are breaking down underload! I'm not 100% convinced this is problem and at

bassncodformeplease
OK rob, i'll explain At times boat would reach 16knts (normally 23/24 loaded up) other times struggled to even get on plain 8/10knots, a couple of times after a drift startup and throttle and engine died completely but restarted no problem. When moving at say 8kt if i trimmed eng up a little it sometimes increased the speed to 10/12kts. Max revs underload 4200 at anytime on sunday, revs freely out of gear! Its not low on OIL, spark plugs are recent and not oiling up at all! I checked the thermostat last week all seemed ok. i'm just about to change impellor as i don't think it pumps as well as it did (just for something to do really ) Well pick the bones out of that for me PLEASE Hope to have answers very soon Cheers mike (wanttogetsortedbynextweekendasitstheopencomp ) PS. Compression in all cylinders are almost as good as new motor! Edited August 26, 2011 by bassncodformeplease
charlieannear
Maybe ask Mark Towersey for a second opinion? This thread has his details Edited August 26, 2011 by charlieannear
Jim
Mike. Nothing to do with your symptoms, but - - I used to have an old Mercury 50 Blue Band. It would start fine and run for a few hours. Then it would die and take hours of pulling ( yes Rob ) to get it going again. The next day it would start fine again. After cleaning the carbs and changing plugs etc. it was just the same. I thought it was coils but never found out. Bloody Mercurys ! ! Jim
mike02380
i can also recommend mark towersy. i had a coil go on my 115 optimax, it didn't "break down" as such, it just went pop, i was cruising at 22 knots at the time and it felt like we had hit something, symptoms were as you describe in the fact, the engine started fine, idled fine, revved out of gear fine but when under load the power of the cylinder with the duff coil was not available thus limiting rpm and speed, mark diagnosed it quickly, got the parts within a few days and fitted them. Thankfully mine was done under warranty as they are expensive parts mike (hopeyougetitsortedothermikegivemarkaring)
