Neal Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 Brings back memories of having to check and change sensors at the top of the Derrick on an offshore Drilling Rigs. They usuallly packed up in a gale! which made for an "interesting" challenge. The exploration rigs float - so the derrick rises and falls with the swell - although dampened - plus it swings as well. In those days - no harnesses and the ladder to the top had no safety hoops. Strangest one was going up in the fog - unable to see anything whatsoever other than the ladder in front of you. Not something I would fancy doing these days - occasionally I have to work from a scissor lift and I find that "uncomfortable" Neal Quote
johnnyb. Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 (edited) OMG.Any structure as tall as that must have a fair bit of movement at the top which would give you the sensation that it is falling down with your weight.......scaaaary The fall wouldnt kill you though>>>the sudden stop at the bottom would finish you off. My better half just had a brainwave, she said do they give him a parashute. PASS?? Edited February 5, 2012 by johnnyb. Quote

Graham Nash Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 I climbed to the top of the Poole TV transmitter many years ago to replace a receiving aerial. It is only about 300ft but it sways about a foot at the top (felt more like 100ft sway). At the time we had we had to climb up the outside of the transmitter fitting bolts into holes in the outside support leg to make our own ladder. I have climbed many structures in the course of my job but that was the scariest (maybe because it was one of the early ones). I also went up in a 60 meter cherry picker once .... an experience NOT TO BE REPEATED!!! Quote
pirky Posted February 6, 2012 Report Posted February 6, 2012 SHHHHHHH..............UGAR !!! That made me wobble on my chair !!! Weather issues .... wind / temp ..... nightmare !! What was the guy doing with the safety clip ..... just over the end of a stud !! Any one of those galvanised fixings corroded and it was failure...... maintenance on one of those types of structures to allow access alone has got to be an immense cost. ... Dave Quote
codpiece Posted February 7, 2012 Report Posted February 7, 2012 I have climbed some hairy rigging in the past but nothing to compare, you could not pay me enough for that, the strength in his arms must be pheonominal!!! Derek, Quote
