Andy G
Hi all I'm hoping to install a new fishfinder during the winter months and have been looking at the Lowrance DSI range (either the 4X or 5X - depending on what The Wise One allows me to spend!). The images look pretty good or is that just gimicky sales blurb - if anybody's used one or got one can you let me know what you think. Cheers Andy
Rob
Hi Andy, I have no idea, but don't tell the FPO what it costs, or if you have to hide 50%!!!!
Andy G
You're telling me Rob! I already get accused of buying the boat more presents than I do her - which is as it should be in my book!
great white
Hi Andy I do not know those sets but have used Lowrance on my last two boats and have been pleased with them. My advice would be to buy the larger one just for clarity of the screen. Run the set on fast scroll speed and set up the set to get the best out of it instead of running all settings in auto. On the Lowrance website you used to be able to get emulators for various sets. These are better than simulators as they need to be operated the same way as the sets themselves. and the screen shown on the PC comes up actual size for the set selected. Even better if you can find a supplier who displays them so that they can be viewed like they do at the shows. Or someone who uses one could offer you a trip. I hope she's not gonna read this or you'll be walking funny for a while. Jim
Andy G
Thanks for the input chaps and Charlie your comment: 'Having a good fishfinder does not guarentee finding good fish' Anything has to be better than the old Navman unit that it's replacing - it has never shown a single fish and struggles to show depth if you go over 10 knots! great white
Andy that was a tongue in cheek comment But to be honest it is not really used to show fish. Much more use finding the fish holding features Set up carefully they do show fish just off the features and especially shoals of bait fish Mine works ok at 20 knots with the standard transducer fitted inside the hull firing through the grp.
