Sinbad
Hi I'm looking for another lightish boat rod, 12-20lb, but something cheap and longer than 7ft. It seems there's some stonking deals at the moment ( gerrys of morecambe etc) on Penn. I've checked these out at the local shops, and they seem well put together with good strong double leg guides. Perhaps only downside - no flourescent tip section. Anyone got any views ? Most of my fishing is in <20m of water with max 4-6oz of lead, and I've had alot of cracking fish on my trusty 12lb short arsed rod. A double dogfish combo, tends to give me a bit of a run-arround, but I'm prepared to live with the light tackle, for the sport it gives. Adam F
Hi Sinbad, Powersticks are cracking rods - they have a glass tip I think which gives them good bite detection. I havent used one though. I am a full convert to the Abu Conolons. The 12lber is my fav. rod. It is happy with small sole and bream in shallow water with just a few onces of lead, but equally I have taken eels over 20lb on it as it has a decent backbone - it is 7' 8" I think, Poingdestres in Soton do them for about 65 quid I think. duncan
My only comment based on a number of other Penn rods (6-16lb Med Reef; 12-16lb Tuna and 20-30lb Tuna) is that they come up a little heavy for their line ratings - basicallly they are really the top listed weight. So if you want a 20lb class then fine.......... Personally I would look at the 12lb Fladden Maximus, or even the 20lb.

Swainiac
Have you looked at the range from Fox?? I think they are predominantly a coarse tackle maker, specialising in Carp gear...any views adam??...I know they were bringing out a sea range...look at these as they will be very well priced with their introduction into saltwater tackle. boybilly
Anaga from Grauvell. Comes with three tips and the heaviest one easily copes with !lb or more. Lightest tip copes with 6-8 ozs. I know some of you lads dont like them but I have had this rod for two years and not a jot of trouble(apart from the occasional broken tip that can be replaced) At
Sinbad
Many thanks for all the comments - Think I'll try a few out at the tackle dealers, and then look for the price bargains on www. - interesting thoughts from a number of you about going lighter end of the range. Just shows most of us are using quite different gear and all rating it. cant go wrong with carbon fibre these days. keep the comments coming !!! thanks again Paul
Maverick Martin
Paul I cant comment on the lighter Pen rods as I have never used them. I do however have is a 30lb class pen and the fittings and finish are v good so would assume there other rods would be finished in similar fashion. The rods I use for every day fishing are a 12lb class ABU Conolon Pro, it is a cracking rod superbly finished but my favourite rod is a Team Diawa TDX 12lb class. It has a little more back bone when put under pressure than the conolon but will still give a lot of fun on the small stuff, its such a pleasure to use but is at in the upper end of the market. Adam F
FOX: Highly rated in the coarse sector - grown massively over the past 10 years, started making bedchairs for carp fishing and now do almost everything you need for fishing. The sea tackle is getting good press at the moment, esp. the lower end of the market, which traditionaly has always been easier to target for a newcomer. The top end of the market is very slow moving with tried and tested items staying put....TLD, TDX, Penn International, Anteres etc all being well established names. Worth looking at though, and keep an eye on it. Bournemouth Fishing Lodge does a good line of Fox gear and he has a few of the sea rods in.
