Brian
I've decided to sell "Figment " and buy something that's trailerable, three reasons: 1. The cost of my mooring at Cobbs for 6 months has increased to the point where I can't justfy it. 2. If I trail I can use the boat all year round instead of just the summer months. 3. It'll then be worth joining PBSBAC. At the moment I've sort of narrowed the choice down to the Warrior 165 and the Explorer Elite. Any information that will help me decide would be greatly appreciated, e.g Engine size, performance, fuel economy, sea keeping etc. Thanks in advance Brian
duncan
Shame Brian - after all the work you have put into the boat, and given that she's such a good size for the local conditions. Have you thought of taking a winter berth somewhere else to enable you to have an extended season reasonably economically?
Brian
Yes Duncan I've considered all options, and quite honestly fany having something different. I quite like the idea of keeping it at home, avoides having to save all the jobs up for the winter and will give the option of towing and fishing further afield. Newboy
Here are a couple of thread on the Warrior and Elite http://www.pbsbac.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=1063 http://www.pbsbac.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=1076 You can read and decide. Brian
Looks like there's nothing much between them.
Adam F
Hi Brian, Nope, youre right...they are almost identical. You will find the finish of the Warrior slightly better and it is slightly more 'refined', but the same hull. My 165 was a 60hp 4 stroke Mariner, which gives me 27 knots max and cruises about 18 - 20 dependant on conditions. I trail her easily with a TDI Astra and she is a 1 man launch. She will carry 4, but 3 is better and 2 gives loads of room when fishing. If you want a test drive, let me know - Im only too happy to help out. Cheers Adam
Brian
Hi Adam Thanks for the info, I might take you up on your offer, need to sell present boat first though. I'm interested that you tow with an Astra, do you have any trouble on slipways with front wheel drive? I'll be towing with a 1.6 Escort, having just changed my wife's car I'm stuck with it for a while. I'll probably get a 12 month slip pass for Cobbs Quay. Newboy
I think the escort will be just ok if you only use Cobbs Quay (gentle slope), otherwise I think it will defintely struggle on other steeper slips like Davies' Boatyard (next door, but a fair bit cheaper tho). I've also found out the boat is a lot heavier at launch than retrieve (food, drinks, baits and fuel being used up), so as long as you get the reverse down the slip on launch, you'll probably be fine, if not, you can always unload as much tackles and stuff as you can before retrieving. Adam F
Brian, Yes I have a 1.7 TDI Astra and it copes fine. On the road is no problem, most of the slips around here are also OK, Cobbs is wondeful, but with the 165 even Baiter is pretty easy. The only slips that I struggle with would be Kimmeridge and Weymouth at low tide - then I take the 4x4. Let me know when you have sold your boat. Paul D
Kam, Although I agree that the boat is lighter on retrieve, I find it more difficult pulling the boat out than launching the boat, since you have to get traction to pull the boat out. That said, the Orkney is probably a similar weight to the Warrior ( maybe slightly lighter ) and I have no problems ( bar a bit of wheelspin to start ) pulling the boat out on Wick and Lymington slipways using a Mondeo TDCI
Newboy
Paul, when I said difficulties on launch was refering to I usually get the first reverse wrong and have to pull the boat up straightening it before a 2nd attempt. One tip I'd learnt from getting good traction is to have the trailer straight and car slightly at an angle, i.e., the car pulling not straight up the slip but say 45 degree to the side. This way I have retrieve with no problem on getting it up.
Seamouse
do you have any trouble on slipways with front wheel drive? I'll be towing with a 1.6 Escort, Hi, My 1.6 Escort was happy enough towing a Warrior 165 but struggled a little for traction on Eastney slip. However, Eastney is steep and usually covered in gravel. Kam's tip for skewing the car slightly is good, alternatively just putting the wheels over a bit then straightening up once you have traction works well. Chocking a rear wheel so you don't have to juggle with the handbrake is good but you need to be careful not to squish the crewman charged with recovering it before the boat wheels hit it. Sweeping the first few feet in front of the wheels clear also helps a lot. Steve
Brian
Adam/Steve/Kam/Paul Thanks for all the advice, Just need to finish off a couple of jobs on the present boat and then get it advertised. Hopefully see you on the water this year, either in "Figment" or replacement, depending how quick Figment sells.
