My Brother bought something similar from the boat show about 5 years ago.

Different design though. Worked OK for a while and then broke.

This one looks a better design.

 

Very good and VERY useful to us boaters.

These are avaible from Roche Marine for £130. ouch" and studying the video in slow motion

it looks like it transfers a horseshoe shaped carriage from one side to the other driven by the 

upward and downward pressure of the pull or push. What is a bit worrying is they are also selling spare heads 

for these units which suggests they may have a history of failure.

I am sure these will do the job but the problem is they are all a bit complicated at the business end which by its very nature is going to get bashed around a bit. I did think about getting one a year or so back for mooring to a ring on a swinging mooring decided in the end I would just manage with a hook and a bit stretching.

These have been about in the yatching world for a good few years now and yes they work and yes they break especially if you load them in a blow.

 

I've personally stayed clear for the reason that they are a one trick pony and don't much like gadgets with a sole purpose.
