duncan Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 I know we had a thread last year on the top end braids, with the whiplash and fireline boys doing battle with words and technical specifications...... but I am simply looking to replace old mono on a number of FS and load a couple of spare multis so I am happy to compromise on line diameter/shape for quantity.... Best I could find is 1000m / 20.9lb / 0.14mm / 29 squid Anyone got a better suggestion hidden in their favorites? Quote
Newboy Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 I always thought you get what you paid for. I remembered Martin had some own brand briad and he found out they were crap and he was able to break it without much trouble. Did you get your money back, Martin? Quote
duncan Posted March 4, 2005 Author Report Posted March 4, 2005 wow - i wasn't expecting to compromise on BS! maybe a bit on diameter, accept oval and the feel might not be brilliant but I thought basic BS was BS (accepting knotting issues etc) Quote
Maverick Martin Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 Duncan Andy at Poole Sea angling has some braid on offer, not a bulk spool but enough on a spool to service one reel at around Quote
Adam F Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 On the contary - I have always used cheap braid (cos im tight!) and have been pretty happy with it. This year I have bought Whiplash for all my rods and to be honest I prefer the cheapish braid from the tackle bargins link. Adam Quote
Adam F Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 http://www.tacklebargains.co.uk/acatalog/M...ine_Braids.html 4th braid down - only the 25lb in Ghost green - the others arnt quite so good. Adam Quote
duncan Posted March 4, 2005 Author Report Posted March 4, 2005 thanks Adam I think I had some samples of this adn the Ghost green was the tightest but they were all pretty loose weave. However going though it all the new Climax micro braid at 19lb / o.o6mm looks very interesting (if you can find/see it!) Quote
Coddy Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 Can I suggest you check out Roger Bayzand "Sundance" own brand see web page http://www.seafishinginfo.co.uk/index.html page 6 under price menu Seems a reasonable price. Not tried it but he uses it, it cant be too bad. Coddy Quote
Maverick Martin Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 Duncan I have tried some of the Climax braid and it is brilliant, really thin for its diameter, nearly as thin as whiplash and easy to use very limp and roundish Martin Quote
Bob F Posted March 5, 2005 Report Posted March 5, 2005 I've always had trouble with the really thin braids that are less than 30lb. They snap very easily on the slightest snag, even when using a mono leader. I will be using the slightly thicker braids when 30lb or below. BF Quote
duncan Posted March 6, 2005 Author Report Posted March 6, 2005 thanks to all - ended up with 1800m of Whiplash pro @ 0.06mm / 23lb test. realise I am going to have to be carefull with it........... Quote
Maverick Martin Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 Duncan Whiplash is pukka stuff you'll be well pleased with it. Did you do a deal with Andy or elsewhere? Martin Quote
plaicemat Posted March 7, 2005 Report Posted March 7, 2005 I offered this last time but was probably too late. Braid Direct at www.braiddirect.co.uk/ offer 100% dyneema oval braid in various lengths and strengths. e.g. 32lb, 1000mtrs Quote
duncan Posted March 8, 2005 Author Report Posted March 8, 2005 plaicemat - the link at the start of the thread is for the braid you refer to; and I also believe it to be the best 'bargin' braid offer out there as I posted. martin - yep found myself chatting to him between beer in the Mariner and lunch in the Jazz Club next door. Thank you for the steer. Needless to say SWMBO was facinated as to why I needed so much sewing thread and singularily unimpressed by the saving I had negotiated! Quote
jack Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 I Have dug out 2 of my largish reels for wreck work and plan to put braid on them.I have used all through wire before but not braid, Couple of dummy questions please,do I need to fill the whole spool with braid or can I just have a top layer. 2 If top layer, how much is enough, for our type of fishing.3 will 30lb be about right. Thanks in anticipation. Jack Quote
duncan Posted March 8, 2005 Author Report Posted March 8, 2005 1. No 2. Depends on the depth and what you are fishing for - generally I would load 150m of heavier braid over another 200m of cheap nylon backing line. 3. Match to rod plus about 10lb but if fishing lighter/thinner braids then about 20ft of hard nylon leader will help tackle losses. I aim to use 23lb on a 15lb rod; 60lb on a 50lb rod and 35 on a 30lb one. 30-40 is common but many use 60-80 for conger! Quote
jack Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 Thanks Duncan,What service, better than having my own personal Oracle. Cheers Jack Quote
