jack
Similar to Barrys topic, I have been digging through older reels as stated in the great Braid debate.I have a pair of Garcia Mitchell 600 AP. reels, one perfect working like a sewing machine, the other minus it's spool.[later] can anyone say if its possible to scource a replacement Metal spool for this model. Wait for this ...The original plastic spool literally exploded, under the pressure after fighting an unknown species of fish for almost an hour [3 of us taking it in turn] whilst the beast towed my 14'boat with 3 anglers, from where it was hooked just off the outer edge of Christchurch ledge bouy, against the tide toward Swanage.Of course the 40lb line cut immediatly when the spool collapsed. I threw the reel into a box in the garage and it has been there for at least 25yrs. Other than the spool , it seems fine !.we suspect it may have been a common Skate,as one or two had been taken around that area,at that time. Ps. I used to catch fish then...Jack
Adam F
An ex.Poole skipper who has now moved to Wales to charter had a book of marks and numbers. In this book was a page entitled: ' Christchurch Screamers' Aparently each autumn he would fish this mark and on a fairly regular basis hook into unseen beasts that would fight like nothing he had ever experianced before. He nevr landed any, but the money went on them being Common Skate. This would be going back about 10/15 years, and yes, these marks were off the end of Xchurch ledge. I have never heard or seen a Common skate being caught along the South Coast for at least 30 years now....can anyone prove me wrong?
Gnasher
Never heard of them here. He may of been on the drift and snagged the bottom as I have occasionally thought I have hooked a monster only to relise that it wasnt to be. Sorry Jack, I cant help with the question though. Maverick Martin
Common skate were at one time common along the south coast and fish over 100lb were regularly caught. Unfortunately this was before my time so I cannot give any personal accounts. Every year sees reports of unstoppable fish and I will never forget one evening a pal and I were fishing around the Poole patch area when something picked up my gear and started moving up tide and didn
jack
Had a result today.I checked all the sites I could find, buying and selling reel bits, found at least 4 people LOOKING for a spare spool for the 6ooap.On an impulse ,I checked on e-bay to see if someone was selling a 600 ap on the cheap.Bingo ! saw advert at 16.00 hrs,and at 16.10,had bought ,a 600ap; a 600;and a 602. all said to be good for 30 squids including P+P. Fingers crossed,if nothing else I have brought my own one back into use and have spares....Jack
