Antenna extention

I have decided how to mount my GPS Aerial. A nylon adjustable mount on the side of the helm. The next bit is my question. I need to get a nylon or aluminium tube about 18 inches long. The "standard" size seems to 1" x 14. (not sure what the 14 is ) The aerial has a female end and the mount a male threaded end so as you see I need the corrisponding ends threaded.

Just looking for a cheaper alternative that

Gordon,

Not an "expert" on GPS aerials, however, I would think mounting on an aluminium ( or any metal pole ) MAY be a bad move, as it will potentially affect the reception.

( However, I am quite prepared to be proven wrong .... )

Why do you need to extend the mount? Considering the altitude of the satelites, 18" isn't going to make any difference, unlike the old days of Decca which used land based transmitters.

Paul, some of the standard extentions have stainless poles as well as aluminium so I guess it shouldn't be a problem unless they are shielded in some way.

Brian, I know you are right. It is just to keep it out the way of swinging fishing leads (in case James comes on the boat! That's what Adam said anyway!!) and general knocks and bangs. The open style of the boat leaves little to mount anything.

I think the araldite might be the answer. I will have a play around this Saturday to see if I can make it look tidy

Thanks

Gordon
