Steve S
I'm going to be fitting some new toys to my boat soon and to make a decent job of it I want to use stainless for the mounts/brackets etc, so... Does anyone know where I can source modest quantities of stainless steel plate of various thicknesses, most likely type 316? Any recommendations for cutters and drills to use? Thanks Steve
Mike Fox
Think Stainless Steve is Lymington based, and he can probably knock it up for you at a sensible price..... Else your'e looking at high speed drills, grinders, and specialist welding gear....
Steve S
Well yes he can and he does good work but he is very slow and keeps missing dates he sets himself. Some of bits I need are things like 12 gauge (approx) rectangular plate 25cm x 10cm with 10 holes in it, the sort of thing I should be able to knock up myself. Other options are Fh brundle in Southampton and the metal store online, both are merchants. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Jim
I can only guess that you've never machined Stainless steel Steve ? You need to run very slowly, Plenty of coolant, Don't allow the tools to dwell as it work hardens the stainless. All not easy for a DIY er not prepared for it. Steve S
Thanks for all your input guys. I haven't machined stainless no Jim, just cut holes in it and seen a similar effect, I used to cut titanium (when i worked for British Aerospace, so so long ago) and that had a similar characteristic. I like to do stuff myself if practical but if not I'm happy to use Matt.
Jim
If you've worked on Titanium you'll know what to expect Steve. Good luck. Jim
