Fuel Usage To The Ripps

To start with, I carried 3 x 25 litre tanks, a 20 litre jerry can and 2 x 5 litres plastic cans. In theory I had over 100 litres but in practic I would say about 90, since I didn't filled them to the brim.

I used just over 1 and 1/2 tanks to get there, the rest of the tanks to drift and when that ran dry I was a little worried I might not have enough fuel to get back if the sea were lumpy.

Funnily enough, the third can lasted just outside Poole Harbour. I reckon all in all I used about 75 litres. Had the condition been nicer on the way out, the fuel usage would have been a bit lower.

Hi Kam

Dawn Raider did really well on fuel, I only used 55 litres and that got me back out to x-ray from christchurch before I had to add more fuel to the tank, I think we must have done 70 + miles in all.

Dan the ripps is about 22miles from poole harbour.

Yes a god day for engine usage all round.

We set a new record on Phaeton logging 10.6 engine hours! Much of that was of course drifting but it's still a lot. Estimate 80 miles covered and 90 litres of fuel used........... sad.gif

Due to my little mistake on our return ie partially refilling the inboard petrol tank with diesel weep.gif have had a little trouble calculating my fuel usage. Have emptied my fuel tank today and after doing the maths it looks as though we used around 75- 80 litres. That was about what I had calculated and left us with a good amount of fuel in reserve.

I would thoroughly recommend not filling built in petrol tank with diesel as it is a right pain to get out mad.gif

One thing that strikes me from all the other postings is that my 2 stroke Optimax V6 outboard is on a par in terms of fuel usage with some of the smaller 4 strokes? especially when you consider the weight of Maverick compared with some of the smaller boats. Food for thought when considering re-engining the boat blink.gif

Martin, your Optimax is 2 strokes but it's a DI, direct injection. Fuel usage for DI engines is comparative with many 4 strokes on certain rev range. They will differ on different rev range. For example my TLDi is (just) more economical than a Mercury F90 at max wot and more economical than (even) a Mercury F50 at trolling speed, but uses about 20% more fuel than the F90 at 4000rev.

Martin your economy will be a function of the DFI but even more it will be because off the throttle setting/revs you cruise at relative to the exponetial fuel/rev curve of all these engines. If you run over 5000 rpm you will suffer with everyone else!

My consumption would have been hit by the swell going out like many, and the fact that the hull and drive could do with a really good clean despite antifouling.... sad.gif horrible drag. Cost me around 15% on consumption... mad.gif

It is amazing how fuel is affected. On the way out revs were lower as was speed but due to having to constantly use the throttle in the swell I used 25 ltrs. On the way back we cruised at 18-20 knots at 4800 rpm and used 20 ltrs - flatter sea.
