will church
I have a Honda 4 stroke 50hp (you know one of the gold ones) on my boat, and I have only used it 3 times, so I don't know if this is normal behaviour: Will it/should it emit exhaust from above water level? All compression is good, it is pumping water well etc, bit it seemed to blow exhaust above transom level but below the head. As it only did it when it had been running for a bit and at fairly high throttle I couldn't exactly see where it was coming from. But there was definately exhaust above the transom coming into the boat. Is this normal? Please help, I am just beginning to love my boat fishing! How hot was the engine block? If very hot (too hot to touch) you may have a jammed thermostat. The engine should run at a warm to nearly hot temp'. It is easy to confuse water vapour with exhaust gas....... For a quick diagnosis try a friend of mine Sam (Trickett Marine) who will come round to yours .....07810 561520. Adam F
Also struggling with the description of Exhaust - I think Im right in saying that most outboards have a through propellor exhaust - quietening the noise and emitting it underwater to stop smell and smoke. Most 2 strokes give off a bit of smoke, but yours being 4 stroke should be OK. Is it a brand new engine on the boat? If so I would be most surprised if you had problems already??? shytalk
most also have small exhaust ports at the top of the leg as water pressure is to great at idle for the exhaust gases to exit via the prop

Paul D
Will, The Honda definitely has an exhaust outlet at the top of the leg ( the rectangular shaped hole ). You do get visible exhaust gases coming out of it as well ( at least I do on mine ). The Honda also has an overheat indicator on the throttle control box as well, so you should see if it were overheating. However, you shouldnt be seeing blue smoke - which I assume you aren;t ( unless you put 2 stroke oil in your fuel ). I suspect you are being paranoid
will church
Well I hope so - that's what the bloke who drove from Portsmouth to Chertsey to look at it said I am prone to being paranoid about stuff like that. Perhaps you'd have a run on it with me for ten mins next time we are both out Paul? It isn't blue, it's just slightly white and smells a bit of burnt fuel. And the outboard isn't new for info. I was a cheapskate. It's 7 or 8 years old. Thanks everyone for reassuring advice
