Friday Night

A friend and I had planned an all night fishathon on Friday night. The weather was some what wet and just a little windy but being the hardened (mad) fisherman that we are, we left Wareham about 4.00pm with the rain lashing down and a very gusty force 6-7 blowing us all over the show.

We had only planned to fish the harbour for flatties and once we got settled close in shore at Arne it was very comfortable. The fishing did not set the world alight with a few small bass and flounder but we did have rather an interesting encounter.

At about 11.30pm the police helicopter was circling the harbour. We heard on the vhf the police rib spaeking with the Bournemouth Belle and it became clear they were looking for thieves who had been active in the harbour that night.

The helicopter then started to circle the area we were fishing. All of a sudden the night became day as its searchlight lit us and the boat well and truly up. Blimey that light is bright. ohmy.gif

Next thing we know spotted in the distance we saw police launch ALARM steaming towards us under cover with no lights on. Oh dear! On arrival it turns out that they had seen our flashlights and presumed that we were in fact the robbers. It was obvious that we weren't as right on que just as they arrived I pulled in a small bass. After taking our details they left us to carry on the nights fishing and dicuss this interesting experience.

OK so this time they caught the wrong guys but it proves that although the Police are fighting a losing battle with marine theft they are at least making an effort. Keep up the good work! biggrin.gif

No Adam,

we were out on my friends boat which is a 17' benetau sports fisher. Thankfully the weather wasnt actually that bad when we got round to Arne and it did calm down. when we steamed back home 7.00 in the morning the wind had gone and the harbour was like a mill pond. glad it didnt go the other way cos that would have been another story.

Here in Hampshire, we never had the benefit of airborn ops!! Ive done a few nights with the EA boys at redbridge, bagging salmon poachers, stealth and nightsights were the order of the day...not helo and nightsun!!! Still........good to see marine crime higher on the agenda
