Looking for a boat in the Poole area.

Wanted to use for various things, not just fishing, so looking for a Shetland 536 or similar. Ideally with trailer and outboard.

Anyone know of one for sale?

Over the coming weeks I may be taking several smaller boats in px which could well suit you.

Would be happy to deal at trade prices to move stock that doesn't normally suit our line up.

What sort of budget have you set yourself and I will keep an eye out for you.

Hi Charlie,

Have you tried www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk ?

It is a cracking site to find what you are after, just keep checkingnit daily as dozens of boats get added.

Also one of the club members is selling a boat that fits into your budget - Gordon Moore - 'Manic Moore' is selling his 16' footer that is in superb condition, great engine and quality electronics - Im sure he will post when he reads this.

Regards

Thanks Adam,

have been keeping an eye out on there and all of the other web boat sales places that I can find. Certainly helps get a feel for what is out there, but we're not wanting to go to far afield to get one, and living in Poole there's bound to be something suitable before too long!

Was reading an article in Sea Angler at the weekend that said the majority of boats are sold by word of mouth, so thought I'd give this a try.

We're looking for something of the Shetland 536 style (i.e. with a covered cabin/facilities) as the intention is to use the boat for 'trips out' as well as fishing, and this type of boat offers protection and some comforts to 'less robust' passengers such as my mum and 18 month old son!

Visit http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk

And search for reference F80996

Been talking with Charlie and this may not be suitable for him, but I know the boat builders who have done this one up and she is 100% top notch as a sports fisher.

They have heavily modified the boat for sports fishing and sport boating generally.

Mods:

They used a good 535 Hull

Took off original "cabin" and hand built a small forward cuddy, leaving a full 10 foot of open deck.

The deck is completely sealed which leads to a sump ready to take a bilge pump.

She has been well, but very toughly finished ready to take a beating and is available with an older, but apparently good (can't comment as I haven't seen it) 40 Hp Mercury.

Looks like a good specimen, but I can see the cabin has been chopped (to give more deck space for fishing?)

Not trying to be awkward but I'm looking for one with the standard cabin and facilities as we want to use the boat for other things as well as fishing, and carry passengers who like a bit of comfort! rolleyes.gif

Thanks though! smile.gif

Are you sure that is what you want? Best of both world sounds good on paper, but will it work in reality?

I used to have a Sheltie Suntrip, in between a 535 and the chopped boat above. It had a larger deck than a 535 but still with a V berth which my 7 & 5 (at the time) could sleep in. I didn't carry them in the cabin as the were sick first time out riding in a confined space with small windows, they didn't have any problems riding on the deck tho.

All the (smaller) Shetland boats have one drawback, the freeboard is rather low, not to mention the stern is even lower than the sides, a 3 yers old would have no problems falling over the side. One way to overcome this is to fit guard rails alround. Make sure all small children wear an auto lifejacket at all time, so if they fall over, at least they would be afloat awaiting rescue.

Well this will be our first boat and we (my Dad and I) have thought through the pros and cons and think that this type of boat is the best way forward for us at the moment.

As I've said before, the boat will not be used just for fishing, and for now this sort of all rounder is what we need if we're to get the rest of the family to come out with us. I realise that'll be a strange concept for some of you! "Why would you want to take the family with you? Boats and fishing are for getting AWAY from the family!" laugh.gif

The size is important as we intend to dry store the boat, towing it to Baiter when we want to use it. So the size of my car and driveway determines the size of boat. Don't want to spend money on a berth/mooring as we really don't know how often we'll use the boat. There's also our budget. We don't want to go mad as we've not been boat owners before and in all honesty we might not take to it! Best of both worlds will let us work out what we like doing the most, and we'll learn what we do and don't like about the boat so that we can specialise more on our next one... if there is to be a next one!

I appreciate the advice though, this is exactly why I have come to this forum! I certainly intend to equip myself with the the safety devices listed on this site, and get qual'ed up. I'm a pretty safety conscious sort, and don't like to leave much to chance. We don't intend to become another 'Novice boater causes havoc' article in the Echo!

Once I've got something to go out in I will be parting with

I am pretty sure everyone knows the style that you want to get.

I think a lot of the suggestions have come from people who started with exactly the same idea as you and have go themselves hooked (so to speak)!

You have set yourself a sensible budget so that if you found you hated it or you weren't getting the use then at least it you don't have to mortgage the house so all in all excellent and you will probably find that everyone on here will be as helpful as possible with tips, tricks and advice.

I think everyone would agree that at the budget you have set aside you will find many boats to suit from very cheap to right at the top of your expenditure. Again some will be good, some will be bad.

If you can find a boat that may need a touch up here and there, but is essentially sound for around the

Charlie - it will obviously come as a bit of a surprise but very very few on here use our boats exclusively for fishing!

In my case between May and September I am unlikely to get out fishing more than twice - and if the weather looks good I may be told 're arrange'!

However between October and April the situation reverses adn I may take the family out a couple of times and go fishing the rest.

This keeps the world going round and enables me to have the sort of 'toy' I couldn't justify just for fishing (me).

FWIW I believe that the cuddy element is overrated for what you are likely to do in the poole area in a boat that size - if the weather requires 'shelter' you just won't be out - and you really shouldn't have people 'down below' when underway either. If the boat's being stored undercover you don't need covered storage either.

All the best - hope to see you at the clubs family day out afloat next year - yes we do have them!

Sounds like your strategy to keep everyone happy is similar to ours Duncan!

Our reasoning is the little cabiny bit on a Shetland (or similar) will:

Provide shelter from the sun in hot weather.

Have small comforts like a loo, sink and cooker.

Allow a little lie down when anchored (we're not thinking of packing the cabin full of people whilst underway, Cuba-Florida style biggrin.gif )

Provide an extra bedroom on the driveway (JOKE!)

The family day sounds like a good day out. Hopefully we'll have found ourselves a suitable vessel by then!
