CREZZ Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 HI EVERYONE , THIS SUNDAY I AM DOING MY VHF COURSE SO HOPEFULLY IF ALL GOES WELL I WILL BE IN THE MARKET FOR A VHF RADIO OF SOME KIND . I AM NEW TO BOATING SO YOUR HELP WILL GO A LONG WAY IN HELPING ME MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION . AS FAR AS I KNOW THERE ARE TWO TYPES , FIXED AND HANDHELD , WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE USE ? AND WHY ? APART FROM OUTPUT POWER DOES THE FIXED TYPE HAVE MORE ADVANTAGES OVER THE HAND HELD TYPE OR VICE VERSA ? WILL I NEED THE EXTRA OUTPUT AS I ONLY HAVE AN ORKNEY STRIKELINER WITH A 25 YAM AND CANNOT SEE ME REACHING OUT THAT FAR FROM LAND LIKE SOME OF THE MEMBERS WITH MORE MODERN FASTER BOATS . OR COULD A BOAT OF MY SIZE GO OUT FURTHER ? ARE THERE ANY MEMBERS WITH BOATS MY SIZE THAT VENTURE FURTHER OUT ? AND WHAT ABOUT SECURITY ARE THE FIXED ONES EASY TO REMOVE ? AS I MAY BE USING A SWING MOORING THROUGH THE SUMMER AND I WOULD NOT BE TOO HAPPY TO FIND SOMEONE HAS PINCHED IT . HOPEFULLY MOST OF YOU HAVE BEEN THROUGH THIS SENARIO AND HAVE FOUND THE BEST SOLUTION AND I WOULD BE GREATFULL IF YOU PASS ON YOUR FINDINGS THANKS CREZZ Quote
Afishionado Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 Hi Crezz, THERE'S NO NEED TO SHOUT!!! It's ok to talk normaly we will be able to read your messages easier Fixed is better as it has a greater range and usualy the aerial can be placed higher up. Most of the fixed VHF sets can be mounted to be demountable at the end of the day so you can take them home. There are several guys with Orkneys and 25hp should be more than adequate for most of the waters fished. Traveling time will be longer of course but the Orkney is a very sea kindly and safe hull. It will get you safely home in a miserable sea and when it's lumpy most of us go for a safe and smooth ride rather than banging across the waves. Mad Mike Quote
Paul D Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 I would recommend a fixed VHF as with a hand held you only have a small aerial and not much height of aerial. VHF transmission is line of sight, so the higher your aerial the better. - Hand held are at somewhat of a disadvantage due to this. It is easy enough to remove a fixed radio at the end of the day ( mine is two plugs and two screws - 30 secs and out ). So fixed is the way to go IMHO. ( Just read Mike's reply ! ). Quote

No need to worry about security as it does only take a minute or two to remove your fixed set. I shouldnt think many members leave any of htere electrical equipment on board. Martin Quote

In fact you can only buy DSC sets now as it is illigal to sell them without, this is new of course, second hand is differant. This does not apply to hand helds. Coddy Quote
reg Posted February 10, 2006 Report Posted February 10, 2006 I carry both fixed and hand held as you can leave the fixed on ch 16 and talk to your mates on the h/h also if you have the h/h in a waterproof case and you are unlucky enough to go o/b you still have some means of contact. that's what we do up here Reg Quote

If you're ever in an emergency sitution you want your broadcast to go as far as possible. In Poole Bay a fixed VHF can be heard by both Solant and Portand coast guards. As the others have said, the external aerial on a fixed unit is mounted higher which will give you more range (although you could connect a hand-held to the external aerial if it has a connector). But the fixed unit also has a much higher power output than the hand-helds (25W compared to 2-5W), which will also gives you greater range. As your confidence builds you will venture further out, especially in the company of other club boats. Ask Paul D. Modern fixed units are easy to disconnect after each trip. We all do it. BF Quote
