Paul D
Found this on the net - shows why you should keep a good lookout. However, from what I thought I understood the coastguard vessel is at fault as they should give way ? - Opinions anyone .... Afishionado
Wrong link Paul - that was the 2004 photo shoot. Certainly not an Spielberg production is it! TomBettle
The first link was a rather shakey video of fishing club boats bombing around Poole harbour. The second link was very interesting. In the UK and unless the rules are different for the coastguard and / or RNLI then the coastguard is well and truly in the wrong and should have turned to starboard to avoid the collision. Either way and whatever the rule, common sense would again apply and if the other boat isn't getting out of the way, you do. IMHO the coastguard boat was being helmed by a monkey. What is the point in doing 30 knots with your engines roaring and shouting "get out of the way"? Get out of the way yourself you numpty! Paul D
Ah - I see where I got the links wrong. Anyhow, I had exactly the same thoughts Tom.
alun j.
Confused at first........... but found it after playing the other !! I agree with Paul......... what sort of Coast 'GUARD' are they ?? and that cameraman was remiss in not shouting to the helm. Are their 'Rules of the road' different to ours ?? On that tack, Coastguard boat should give way. Perhaps other [ unseen] events were happening......... even so , easing back would have prevented this. Alun. Brian
Agree with Tom, the Coastguard was in the wrong, even if he wasn't as it was obvious the other boat hadn't seen him he should have taken avoiding action. Looked like a case of "I'm bigger than him, so I'm not slowing or turning".
great white
The anti collision rules are international and everyone is supposed to follow them. The main rule is to keep a good lookout at all times, which is what the smaller boat was not doing. But the coastguard boat was the give way vessel and therfore should have altered course to pass behind the boat approaching on his stbd side, especially as he had obviously noted that the other boat was on collision course and was probably unaware of him. If you think there is going to be a collision or a close call you are supposed to take avoiding action, not shout. We should all know the Anti collision rules and observe them. I am sure if a RNLI coxswain was as guilty as the coastguard one, the book would be thrown at him. Charlie
Fugazi
If driving on the right and giving way to traffic on the left in the US reads across to the sea, which I doubt, makes no difference. The coastguard should have done all possible to avoid a collision when clearly he was aware of the danger. I
