Are there any Do's and Don'ts to buying a seat Pedestal?

What do I need to look for??

Should I get a fixed height or ajustable.

Are there different types of seat mountings?

Do I need to buy the seats first and then find out what type of seat mounting I'll need?

On the Jeanneau boat the bucket seat had a forwards and backwards adjustment. That would be nice, but I guess it is expensive??

Any hints on the best place to purchase the pedestals and seats?

cheers

Hi Bob,

I would go for metal pedestals as opposed to the plastic ones - basically more durable. I would also go for fixed height - the adjustable ones juts dont lock properly and once they start to slip thats it.

The Warrior ones are pretty basic but bomb proof - Im not too sure where they come from - Ill have a look and let you know.

If you like I can ask for a quote for a complete set of two as you saw.

They are rake adjustable and height adjustable, but both moving mechanisms are rather basic, although the seats are very comfy.

I imagine they will be rather expensive compared with off the self jobbies though.

If of interest I may be able to check out a few trade catalogues for you too...

On my Microplus, I used the ones from the chandlers that advertise that sort of stuff in BFM. They're aluminium and seem pretty good, didn't cost a bomb and are easy to fit. Anything else needed?

Thanks for the comments, chaps. Very helpful.

Tom, yes I wouldn't mind a costing for the complete set up. Send me a PM when you have the spare time.

cheers

It depends, if you need height to see where your going while seated this inevitably means your feet are up on a support at the helm. If you want to swivel round and fish, its like being on a bar stool with your feet dangling off the deck. Therefore, height adjustable seats are essential to both helm and sit and fish in comfort. This thread has just reminded me I need to get out on the boat and modify my pedestals again. Need to drill a hole right through so that I can install a removable drop nose pin when the seat is set at the correct height for helming the boat. That should stop that dreaded sinking feeling associated with adjustable pedestals as I bounce majestically across the oggin.
