Swainiac
I dont know if itys just me, but since starting to visit this site I have had an enourmous increase of dubious mails containing stuff like "re your pics" and "re your mail" and its coming from fishit domains etc. Thes emails carry an attatchment that contains another new virus, so buyer beware!!!!!!!!! Being a new member to the club, and therefore new to this site, it may have already been adressed by yourselves, and I'm just slow on the uptake............nothing new there ;0) Cheers guys.................Rich
Paul D
Rich, There was indeed a virus sent via the mailing list. However, there are a large number of viruses "in the wild" currently ( We had same issues at work ). The viruses certainly will not be as a result of visiting this site. What will have happened is someone who has your e-mail address gets infected. The virus then looks in their address book and send itself to you and so on and so on. ( This is how the mailing list received one - I have since password protected the list to prevent this happening again ) Everyone should use a decent virus scanner / detector to prevent infection and should never open attachments unless expected. I hope this helps. regards Paul PS: I am currently receiving around 1 to 2 infected e-mails per day ( from all sorts )
Guest Guest_Afishionado
I currently use a UK based organisation called Spamjab < spamjab.co.uk > I got a free 12 month membership but I don't know if they are still doing it. Any way it's 100% good at filtering spam, porn, and virus BEFORE they arrive in your mail box. They are easy to contact via the net and will talk you through the download prosess if your a PC clutz like me. It's specialy good if you've got gids that use the net as they allow you to give each person their own individual access to which you set the filters you desire. MIKE PS they are nothing to do with me, it's just that I think they do a bloody good job.

Coddy
Hi It might be an idea if you add the following email address to your address book AAAAAAA@AAA.com This way if a virus trys to send a message from your address book you will get a message of "failed delivery" and know that you have a virus in your system. It also helps as the virus can get trapped due to its failure as this is the first email address in your address book. WOrks for me so I hope it helps others. Paul D
Nice idea, but as they say "Prevention is better than cure". I would still recommend the use of a virus scanner for internet connected PC's. The reason is that you may very well detect the fact that you have a virus on your PC, but it could very well be too late then..... Furthermore, you may not get a non-delivery report, since many of the trojans/viruses use their own SMTP engine to send the mail ( using your address book to send ) and the return address could be anything. So your PC could be sitting there infected whilst you are blissfully unaware. I would recommend using Norton Internet Security ( Firewall and virus scanner ) or Trend Micro Internet security. You will be astounded at the number of attempts from outside to hack into your PC ( especially of you are broadband connected ). Hope this is of use. Adam F
Pauls got me worried now! So I have Norton Antivirus. Will that help - or do I need to get the firewall and virus scaner package? I notice that when I send an email Norton opens a window telling me it is scanning my msg?? Failing that if there anything I can download (free)??? Or am I fully covered? ADam
Paul D
Adam, You can download a program called ZoneAlarm which I think is free. However, the virus scanner is the important part and it is worth remembering that NT has a firewall of sorts built into it. To enable the firewall in NT right click on the two computer icon that show your internet connection in the bottom RHS of the screen and select Status. In the status window select the Properties button. In the properties window select the "Advanced" Tab. You should now have a window with an option at the top called "Internet Connection Firewall". Tick this box and your internet connection will be firewall protected to a degree by XP. If already ticked then all well and good. Useful ? PS: This thread could do with being moved to the Site and Forum topic I think ?

Paul D
The virus that is "doing the rounds" at the moment is the NETSKY worm. This is prevalent enough to be mentioned on a big sign in PC World. We also have the same worm affecting our e-mail at work. The "fishy theme" from received messages has nothing to do with posting on this site. All e-mail addresses on this site are not disclosed to third parties etc. etc. What is happening is that the virus infects someones PC and then sends itself to everyone in their address book looking as if it has come from someone else in their address book. You are likely to receive "fish theme" e-mails simply because that is probably where you send most e-mails / spend most of your time ?? Virus scanner time I would suggest ! great white
Hi Paul Alarmed to read about the virusus especially when I checked out the original addresses. I have an anti virus on both my machines, how do I know that it can detect this worm. Charlie.
Paul J
Charlie, make sure you have the latest updates for the antivirus and for Windows, you can get these online Paul J
Paul D
Charlie, I was alarmed when I saw the addresses too !! - However, I am sure you can relax, since the virus has got that particular address from someone else's machine and forged the header. ( I looked in the e-mail path and it came from a different domain to the senders address = forged ) Details on the worm that infected these particular e-mails can be found here. NETSKY worm details If your scanner is up to date, it will find these. The above link tells you what the worm does, so you could look for these files/symptoms ( I am pretty sure you have nothing to worry about ). regards Paul
Paul D
There is a removal tool for the NETSKY worm. The link is posted here NETSKY Removal Tool The tool itself is attached below :-
great white
Thanks Paul I don't know where it came from but it came and it got opened. when I updated my virus checker it detected the worm virus on my home PC. Thanks to your help and using the link above it has now been removed. I was showing 39 files affected even after the Anti Virus had healed the PC, but now with your help it is showing 0. Cheers mate, get you a cold one at the AGM Charlie. If any of the Members have had email from my PC recently beware of one with shower zip mentioned. I would advise running a Virus Scan. Thats how I checked and found I had the Ba****d. at least its gone now
