Gazza
I`m nearly ready to buy a wheelclamp for 13" wheels, with my new axle on the way soon. What i need to know is a make and type that is fast and easy to fit even when it`s cold , wet and blowing a storm ? Not too fiddley or nuts and bolts to lose or rust out or even allen keys that get rounded off or get lost. Don`t want much do i ? All replies and experieces wil be gratefully received Gary
plaicemat
I find my 'Bulldog' is fairly straightforward, provided you keep it well lubricated. It is also, apparently, one of the few recognised by the insurance community. They are not the cheapest but they work and, when you consider the value of your outfit, is
Afishionado
I use the SAS clamp which IMO fills all your requirements and is Insurer approved. Check the prices on ebay which is where I bought mine. Mad Mike
Gazza
Cheers, Mike i have one nearly the same as yours,... already sadly the bolt that tightens up with the allen key is getting worn after 2yrs........So i was hoping to find another solution.......... but thanks....Do you think keeping the threads and locks oiled up a good or bad idea ? meaning grit and sand will stick......but the rust won`t ? Newboy
My insurance only require the trailer to be wheelclamped when not in use, it doesn't specify made or model. I use a hitch lock in additional plus a 12mm wire cable padlocked (to the car) with a motorcycle approved lock.
Swainiac
Gazza, as a retired plod, I'd offer this advice. Firstly, ask your insurer which anti theft devices THEY reccommend. then follow simple rules. Physical security is always the major deterrent to would be thieves, they just love the easy option, less risk on them. Try and utilise more than one detterrent, either a wheel clamp, and chain the thing to an immovable object.....not your gas main inlet ......... Some of these hitch covers are pretty effective. Also look at where you are parking the thing. Try and avoid dark areas, if its at home, and down the side of your house, bang up an Infra red movement detector coupled to a security light, strategically placed to avoid flooding neighbours front rooms, but allowing would be rascals to be spotted from the road. Also, mini cameras are dirt cheap these days, couple one of these to a spare hard drive on your PC, and bingo, 24hr surveillance at home, when away from home, ask yourself a simple question, would i leave a fifty quid note under a rock here?? No?? Then dont leave your trailer there unlocked or shodilly secured. Theives are cowards, and will always take the easy option......so park yours next to an unlocked trailer!!!!! jack
Sorry Mike,I lost the keys to my { ? } wheelclamp.as named by yourself. It was securely and correctly attached, and less than 12 months old. I let the tyre down and got it off with a large screwdriver.I complained at the Caravan show to the same company's sales rep who said." Ah well ,you get what you pay for " Moral ? Take what he said as good advice.! jack
Paul D
Now where would anyone get the idea of chaining the trailer to the gas mains inlet Imagine - "Fire, police or ambulance ? " Well err - all 3 please
Adam F
...." one sunny afternoon Paul D decides to have a few hours relaxing fishing, so hooks up Neo to the family car, loads the boat and locks the front door. Climbing into the car he slowly begins to pull away before realising that his pride and joy is chained to the main gas pipe into his house....panicking he swerves and the metal trailer clips the gate post sending sparks flying......BOOOOOOOM!!!! Up goes the house... " I take it that you no longer chain it to said pipe, paul??
Paul D
Still chained to pipe - but your scenario is not possible - the gate post is a wooden one I think Rich thought it was a little unsafe ( on a similar level to sticking your arm down the shute of a shredder .... ). Seriously though, it is not possible to leave the trailer attached to the pipe and then attach it to the car - my chain is long but not that long enough. Newboy
Paul If required my company is corgi registered, we could come out and reconnect you if necessary Martin Reconnect to what? The pipe might still be there, but most of the house won't.....

Paul D
Got a ball hitch lock on the trailer as well - nice cheap way of preventing the trailer from being towed.
Adam F
Ive heard that they will use a hatchback, lift the jocky wheel into the open boot and then drive off?? Martin - Corgi regsitered? Can you do a boiler service - been here over 2 years and its never been touched??
Gazza
My friend had problems with his super duper built in hitch lock from a certain trailer company (Hallmark rollercoaster) . Anyway the lock got jammed on so he could not hitch it to the car to get it home!!!! All he did was reverse the car to the trailer and using several feet of rope lashed the hitch to the tow bar and drove home!!! But i think your right if a thief really wants something not alot will stop them!!! An oppertunist thief however will be put off by security measures put into force. So getting back to the original question, who knows of a wheel clamp that is quick and easy to fit ? Gary

Swainiac
Gary, go to your insurer and ask them which they recommend, then simply put that list on this thread and ask who has experience of which type. Try and speak to the Marine Crime unit in your respective area, and fire it past them. The telephone number for Hampshire police is 0845 0454545. Ask the nice lady to put you through to the Marine unit offices. I know the skipper of Hampshire Marine Unit, I'm sure he would offer advice. As far as if he wants it, the thief will take it is spot on. Dont give them the opportunity. Rich
