Swainiac
Guys, I'm currently working on a page for the site which holds diagrams and links for reel maintenance, having experienced diffs with my TLD 5 recently. If any member has a fave reel that they want included, or has a reel that gives them recurring problems.......like a slipping worm gear on the small ABU Lever Drag 6500's for instance, post here for inclusion. If the page is pinned when complete, I'm sure it will generate more visits etc for the site, and hopefully be of benefit to both Club and Forum members. Seamouse
Penn GTi's please. They come apart OK but don't go back together quite so well Steve
duncan
come on Steve - they may be a little fiddly around the engage/disengage mechanism but that's all. Both my 310 and 320 went back together eventually. most of the star drags are fiddly but OK - it's the lever drags that can have clever little foibles ........... Seamouse
come on Steve - they may be a little fiddly around the engage/disengage mechanism but that's all. Both my 310 and 320 went back together eventually. Mine didn't!!!! To be fair, it belonged to a mate whose Dad had 'fettled' it for him and I suspect there were a few bits missing. Went to the reel doctor in the end and came back with an impressive list of new parts. While we're on the subject, I've just retired a GT320 because the level wind is jumping the worm gear at one end. Can't see any obvious fault on the gear so I suspect it is the line guide thingy that's worn. Is that normally the case and does anyone have a cheap source for Penn parts? Otherwise it is more trade for the Reel Doctor Steve
duncan
most likely the pawl is seized and not rotating properly. Simple to check just unscrew and seee if it drops out. you do grease/oil it occasionally?
great white
The bigger Shimano Calcutta after changing the main drive spindle when the reel took a knock its always has a problem with the auto engage/release button Its been serviced twice in wales which cures it for a while, but I would like to be able to DIY it, as I do with all my other reels Great reel apart from that problem but its corrosion resistance is not great Charlie

Trust me, I'm a doctor I'll rip it apart at some point and see if I can mislay enough bits to justify sending it off for a proper repair Steve
Paul J
Simple remedy with that one PJ, open the reel, and remove the gears, then eat them.......they're delish........made of chocolate!! I think it's the actual Worm thats worn as it does not reverse itself and likes to bunch up the line on one side - have replaced the pawl several times and it still sticks when rotated manually so its not the plastic gears, i have removed it now , who needs the level wind anyway. I still cant stop myself thumbing the line back on anyhow- old habits die hard PJ Edited June 12, 2006 by Paul J
markee_b
If it's schematics you're after then you can do worse than go to this site Mikes Reel Repairs They're based in Canada and the postage is still reasonable from there too if you need any parts. DommyBoy
How about my little John Wilson Six Shooter left hand wind bait castiing reel.................................. Any ideas as to why my level wind has packed up. It works until it gets to 1 end and then it gets stuck and i dont know why. Ive taken off now but now all my line piles up in 1 part of the spool. Anyone ever sent any John Wilson tackle back to the manbufacturers and if so what was the service like and did they charge much? Any advice welcome!!!!!!! Cheers Dom
Adam F
Dom, Check the worm drive in the casing that guides the level wind - on my Abu 6500 they have both become worn where they cross to return the guide, and thus the line tends to build up on one side. I replaced these and they work fine. Adam
BigMac
Dom, I would also check the pawl that guides the level wind on the worm gear, I've had a couple wear on me in the past. You cant really see the wear, but I replaced them and all is now tickety boo Al
