duncan
It can vary dependig upon the tow vehicle, but around 25kg (50lbs) is 'normal'. Basically you want it nose heavy but not so much that you affect the handling of the tow vehicle (front wheels in the air a bad sign) or it;s rear suspension. If you can't lift the hitch manually it's probably to heavy! Beware 4 wheel trailers because the hitch height can create additional forces against the pair of wheels if either to high or low which distorte the picture. Guest Malroy
For nose weight you need to check the towcars max permissable nose weight. Some vehicles have less than half or even 1/3 of others. Had a Honda Aerodeck some time ago that only had a 50lb limit & because of this never made a good towcar. Some 4x4's go to 150lb which is one of the reasons why they handle the extra forces on the tandem axle units better. You need really to set the trailers noseweight to just under the manufacturers limit up to the 75-85lb mark max or the max stated by the trailer manufacturer. The heavier up to this you can safely achieve the more stable you will find the tow will be. I found around the 75lb mark a good allrounf figure. Your trailer or caravan should never be back end heavy. Malroy - Anglesey
Bob F
Good stuff Malroy. Why not register on the forum? It costs nothing and you will have access to the full site. Useful for us to have a contact in Anglesey, too. We have a trailoring section in the club and this might be one of the venues we will try in the next year or so. cheers Bob F.
