Gnasher
well, instead of doing the family thing and driving upto London to see the relatives 9 ileft the missus to take the kids there instead i decided to get out for my 1st ever proper Cod session. I met fellow club member Clive and headed off for launch at Keyhaven. Got the boat in at low water, managed to sink the trailer wheels in the thick silt and then relised that i had left the lifting buoy, so a quick trip home whilst I left Clive to set up his tackle on the pontoon. Anyway, we set off after the initial problems, navigating out of the harbour to hurst where it was nice and calm, allowing me to get the boat on the plane and at 22 knots. We got to the needles bridge in quick time, but here we were met with a nasty chop that chucked the boat allover the place for 5 minutes. Once past, i head to join a couple of other boats that were already on the cod grounds. A quick wave to someone in a Boston Waler, PJ maybe (???), but with VHF problems, i couldn't call up and be sure. Anchored up, got the rods out, big squid baits to me, squid/lug baits to Clive and 2lb+ of lead in a very strong tide. The first couple of hours gave the normal twitch twitch as we had doggy action mixed with the odd jumbo pout, then all of a sudden the rod fished 30yards down tide doubles in the rests. COD ON!!!!!!!!!!! After a decent scrap, up comes my first ever Cod, not huge, but a IOW fish all the same. Just as im doing a picture, Clive calls and says my other rod is doubling up. I drop my cod on to the deck, to do battle with my 2nd fish........ COD ON AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!! Another decent scrap brings my 2nd fish, all in a hectic 5 minute spell. MY 2ND COD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! after that, a deserved cupper, followed by a conger type bite during the slack water. I hit it, have a decent tussle for 5 minutes before it drops the hook, followed by Clive hooking a probable conger that he tussles for 5 minutes or so before it also gets away. Anyway, at 3pm we up anchor, motor back to keyhaven in flat calm seas. I know that the cod arn't huge, but a couple of fish, up to around double figures is a right result on a maiden cod trip. Shame im not fishing the comp on thursday Interesting, the cod were full of hardback crab, so maybe peeler(if you can get any!!) and squid combo could be a killer in the comp. Dan P.S Thanks for being decent company clive. Edited December 27, 2006 by Gnasher
