Mike Fox
I took a second rod out on the Cod Comp, in case of problems or a chance of whiting, but noted that the handle was all gouged and damaged. It couldn't have happened on Neo, so assumed I must have damaged it in transit - maybe the tackle box banging into it in the boot of my car? Checked the boot and no evidence of damage there though. When I got home, I was going to put the rod in the usual place in the garage, when I saw these black plastic "shavings" on the floor - which proved to be bits of handle. Carol guessed it had been chewed rather than gouged. George's new spinning rod also had a few teeth marks, but his new Ugly Stik was fortunately untouched. Remembering the rod had been used last with squid, and put away without a thorough clean (tip here...), I reckoned it had been chewed by a mouse, especially as we have had the odd one or two in the garage since we moved in 8 years ago. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I set up two mousetraps with squid as bait, and this morning caught a beauty by the back of it's neck. Seeing as the bait was THEN removed by another mouse, I'm going to have to continue baiting up until I can't catch any more! Mike
Paul J
had a hole chewed in my neoprene waders that were left in the shed once. That was probably down to the scent of bait left on them come to think about it PJ Edited December 30, 2006 by Paul J
alun j.
Pesky rodents....... I once lost most of a prize-winning bag of coarse fish whilst fishing a C.A.C. Christmas Match on the Stour because some mice had nibbled through my keepnet. At least they didn't get home........ they jumped out of my box when I opened it on the river bank; they'd moved on to the groundbait in the box. I hope they made a fat Christmas dinner for a riverside predator! Watch out if you keep stored winter veg. in outside stores....... rats have a taste for raw potatoes and they act as an antidote to rat poison. Alun. Newboy
I have a couple of mice in my garage, but (touch wood) they have't been at my rods or tackles yet. They have been at some flour I keep in the garage tho.

Mike Fox
Groannnnnnnnnnnnnnn. On a more serious note - does anyone know if you can replace the upper hand grip on a rod easily and cost-effectively? Mike
Afishionado
Groannnnnnnnnnnnnnn. On a more serious note - does anyone know if you can replace the upper hand grip on a rod easily and cost-effectively? Mike Cost effectively ? Yes if you DIY Easily ? Yes if you don't mind a bit of, indoors by the fire, work. How? What is the rod made of, how is the grip constructed, 2 part either side of the reel mount, or one part with the reel mount forward of the grip, what is the grip made of ??????????????????????????? OR If you want a quick relatively cheap fix, fill the chewed out area with Isopon filler and sand level when set. Then buy some 'Self Amalgamating Rubber tape' and spiraly bind over the area (VERY TIGHTLY) stretching out the tape to triple or even 4 times (can't spell quadruple) its length as you go along. Do 2 layers. The Self amalg' tape will shrink back on it's self and amalgamate into a solid mono sheath. I did a quick fix on a rod 20 years ago and it's still looks fine. Whiz it round if you want Mike and I'll have a look see. Mad Mike
Fugazi
On the subject of rod repairs could anyone recommend which are the best rod rings and where to get them? No matter what rod I buy the rings always seem to start falling apart after a few days fishing, mostly with the liners falling out of the metal frames. I now have a garage full of rods all with missing or damaged rings, even my expensive carbon rod had a ring fall apart second time out. It seems that only my trusty Wimborne market
Maverick Martin
Gordon Not sure about rod rings but the 7000 size reeels are a perfect match for Conolon pro's or my favourite rods Team Diawa TDX in either the 10-20lb class or the 4-8oz uptider Martin
Paul J
Gordon, Iagree with Martin on the Diawa's however those Fenwicks that are up for grabs for the fish of the month look good pJ

Each month there will be a Fenwick 20lb or 30lb class rod up for grabs which as PJ says would go well with a 7000 series reel Martin
Adam F
Gordon, Go for the proper Fuji jobbies, dear but they last better than cheap imitations. Make sure they are Fuji's though - many shops will tell you that they are Fuji's, but look closely at the legs, they will have Fuji stamped on them. The best EVER were the fuji's with the luminous inserts, but I think they have stopped making them. Adam
Paul D
Gordon, As you probably recall, I use an Abu 7000 with the Solid-C rod ( 6ft version ) and it is a good match. However, having destroyed a top ring on one of these and the insert on the second ring down on another, they do not come under your category of durable
Fugazi
Thanks Guys, I'll try and source some Fugi rings first and failing that it looks like I need to dig deep and go for the Team Diawa TDX. However, while I'm saving up for it I'll continue fishing hard to try and win one of those Fenwick's now that Team Fugazi is starting to get into the competition prizes. Swainiac
Gordon, I did get some decent fujis with the lumo centres from Poindetres in Shirly, Southampton. They do charge like wounded elephants for them though!! Rich
