It's A Wonderful Day

Mike,

Youre right!!

However having been fooled by the small weather window last week, my plan today was to go piking instead.

I spend a lovely relaxing day sat by the lake at Broadlands. I managed 2 pike, the best just into double figures.

Made a nice change!

Good call Adam,

'Twas lovely in the Solent first thing.........but the breeze got up , against the tide, by late morning........so was rock and rolly to catch dogfish by!

I'm trying something different next weekend!

Alun.

PS> It was good to be out in the sun; company was good, with 4 club boats out together.

Overdraft left the mooring at about 7 45 after bad start at home finding the bait freezer had been accidently switched off and 4 boxes of squid and 6 packs of mackerel not smelling to good. So a quick call at the Quay for fresh supplies and off we went. Out past Old Harry and a bit of a swell but not bad at all, anchor down and straight into a channel good start, but thats all it was, 2 hours later pout, pout & pout. Moved 1 mile in and bang 32 channels upto 2lb 12oz. and a few Lsd. Grandson was well pleased with the new rod (and floatation suit thanks Martin) so we headed off home in a rather cheery mood and wait for the next chance too have another go. biggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

Thanks for a great day out Gordon, good company, my first time on a Raider 18 and I have to say an impressive boat, and due to some precision anchoring biggrin.gif my first cod of 2007 biggrin.gif

and by 6.00pm the FPO and I had scoffed the lot tongue.gif

Great to get out again, roll on the next window

Thanks again Gordon

Thanks to Alun and Gastronaught for a pleasant day out. You will notice that my report doesn't end with "and the FPO and I scoffed the lot for tea". Although it was great to get out again in this extended period of gloom, wind and rain, the fish decided not to come out to play. Apart from a few lsd's and pout which at least kept up the interest there was nothing for tea. Still great fresh bacon and tomato butties on homemade wholemeal bread with cups of hearty, spicy celeriac curried soup helped to keep the wolf from the door.

That's my lot, I think, until the spring fish arrive. Roll on the good weather.

Terry.

Fished with Simon on board Cimarra, with Peter, launching from Lymington with other club boats. My first time on a Raider 18 as well, and was impressed at the stability, speed, space, and a superb set of electronics!

We fished with Gastronaught, Fugazi, and Neo at a mark in the Solent, and were encouraged by the radio message of a cod to Gordon M (nice fish Gordon!), but were doomed to a session of doggies and pout.

When the wind picked up, we up-anchored and tried the island side of the Solent, having a slowish trundle over Hampstead Ledge to see what was there, and made a point to return for a tackle-risking session if our second mark failed.

We fished a mark near Yarmouth that looked very promising. I had a good take on my first drop, and after lifting it clear of the sea-bed, it was thumping away in a most unusual manner then it all went slack. I pulled in, and there on my 7/0 was impaled one of the bluish-black smaller feeding claws from a lobster - still moving.

I went back down, and tried to get the rest - but no joy.

We had a much better size of pout, and Peter was connected to something large that seemed to be a decent conger, but it broke him up. We all had similar bites at times, but nothing we could get over the side.

As the sun went down, we hammered back to Lymington at 35 mph (startling!) and a great day on the water was had. Shame about the lack of cod, but Gordon proved they're still there!

Thanks again Simon, for a brilliant, and eye-opening trip!

Cheers Terry,

Looks almost like a summer's day [ and it was early on ]; an hour or so later you could hardly hold the camera still ......... and cooking the second round of bacon sarnies was a bit more tricky!

Alun.

PS, We enjoyed our pout fillets pan-fried in lemon olive oil [ a real 'find' for fish cooking]...... how was your calamari pasta ?

Nice to get out too.

Got to Lymington and met up with Alun J, Terry, Simon, Mike F and his crew. Speedy launch from Lymington and steamed to the mark along with Gastronaught ( apart from nearly ending over the other side of the Solent as I wasn't concentrating too much on where the mark was ! ).

Nice and flat to start - rougher later but then calmed down again.

Evidently I anchored the mark accurately based upon Gordon "precision anchoring" Moore's applause as they arrived smile.gif

Fugazi once again though managed to be anchored alongside Neo and then haul up a couple of cod(LING) whilst all we could do was watch in awe weep.gif

Myself and PJ had one bite each which we both managed to fail to connect and I caught the solitary fish on the boat ( a doggie ).

Decided to return around 2 PM to get back in time to watch Reading and hopefully wind up Mark B ( not today though tongue.gif ).

Was good to get out though and good company as usual with PJ

Definitely going for an annual pass for the lymo slipway now that the man collecting the launching fees is somewhat more efficient.

Only takes 3 or 4 Mudeford launches [ April - Oct.] to make the annual pass worthwhile...... whereas you need to exceed 8 at Lymington.

What's the score at Baiter?

On balance, and esp. if autumns and winters turn out to be as windy as this year's been, ......... I'll also be looking at the extra season ticket.

And if the cod fishing continues to decline , I'll be exploring the flounder marks inshore and save the bumping about.

Alun.
