pegleg Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 Hi All, I am getting closer to being a boat owner...ie have found the one i want and price is agreed subject to etc. The trouble is it is moored down in the expensive private marina at Weymouth which is paid for up to the 1st April. As you may or may not know i am due for another op on my leg and will be out of action for a while , so i am looking for a temporary mooring solution in the poole area, dry stack, pay per week/ per launch etc until my council berth is available at Weymouth . possible 6mths. Any help will be very appreciated. Cheers guys Jas Quote
Maverick Martin Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 Hi Jason The cheapest dry stack in Poole by far is Rockley park . Let us know the size of your boat and I'll find out prices for you. Martin Quote
pegleg Posted February 26, 2007 Author Report Posted February 26, 2007 Hi Martin, Hull length is 6.8m/ 22.31ft with max being 6.99m /22.93 ft. I don't know if this includes the bathing deck though.. Beam is 2.36m / 9.06ft and weighs 2217 kgs. Do Rockley do the launching and retieving if given fair notice etc ? Cheers mate Jas Quote
Swainiac Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 Jas, bathing decks are removable, dont go over the specified length with accesories. Rich Quote
pegleg Posted February 26, 2007 Author Report Posted February 26, 2007 Hi Rich . I didnt realise that extras were included into the equation. Just thought they worked the mooring fees out on the basic length of hull. May be time to get the spanners out if the price difference is vast. Quote
Swainiac Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 Jas, I'm not sure if they do, but its best to check!!! Quote
Maverick Martin Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 You would be charged for all protruding bits including the leg or outboard if you have one Can't find the rate chart for rockley but will keep looking Martin Quote
pegleg Posted February 27, 2007 Author Report Posted February 27, 2007 Hi Martin , been down to rockley today and saw Andy . I got their price list etc and he advised me to get a summer mooring. To be honest i came away more confused than when i went in, but no doubt it will be as clear as mud once i've read through the paperwork. Cheers mate Jas Quote
Afishionado Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 Do you want dry stack because you might use the boat from time too time, or do you just want to store it for a period? I am not too sure which you want. But if it is just storage then there are less expensive ways than dry stacking. Mad Mike Quote
Maverick Martin Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 For short-term storage then mooring would be a cheaper option, I don't think you can pay for short-term dry stack, prices this are per year. As Mike says if its just storage your after there maybe other options. You would though need a trailer because otherwise transportation costs could prove prohibitive Martin Quote
Afishionado Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 If there is no trailer and you do decide to go for a wet mooring then I was going to sugest the boat yard up the Wareham River. Because of it's position it does not command the high prices that the harbour yards command. But the name of it escapes me??????????. Mad Mike Quote
Coddy Posted February 28, 2007 Report Posted February 28, 2007 Mike, were you thinking of Ridge Wharf Yacht Centre or Redclyfle Yacht Club? Coddy Quote
Afishionado Posted February 28, 2007 Report Posted February 28, 2007 Yes. One of them. I didn't know there were two things up there, I always thought of it as Ridge Wharf now you remind me. Am I right in thinking storing up there would be cheaper than Poole? Mad Mike Quote
bootlegger Posted February 28, 2007 Report Posted February 28, 2007 If it's a case that you want a reasonable mooring for occaissional use for a short term period (ie 6 months) then I would reccomed Parkstone Bay. Their 6 month summer swing moorings are as cheap as Rockley, they provide a free water taxi service to and from your boat, Rockley don't so you dont need to use a tender at Rockley. Parkstone Bay is closer to the mouth of the Harbour by far (saving at least 20 minutes steaming time). It's also a lot secure than Rockley, has CCTV that work and staff that are helpful as oppossed to Rockley and you're a lot less likely to have anything stolen from or off your boat at Parkstone than you are at Rockley, belive me I speak from experience. Hope that helps... Quote
Maverick Martin Posted February 28, 2007 Report Posted February 28, 2007 Staff at Parkstone are definately helpful but not sure about the security there. In my short stay I have heard lots of mumblings of things going missing, cctv that doesn't work or cover all the yard. Also the main issue for me at Parkstone is the blooming security gate that never works and on the odd occasion it does the personell gate is always left open However these issues wouldnt effect a swinging mooring Martin Quote
Swainiac Posted February 28, 2007 Report Posted February 28, 2007 Jas, in order to get the fuller picture on recorded crimes at specific moorings or yards, approach the Dorset Police Marine Crime Unit, provide post codes for the sites you are researching, and ask for statistics for the past year or so. They can provide these for you. They may use some cack regarding the freedom of imformation act, but you can always just ask. Rich Of course, this only shows reported crime figures, not actual!!! pegleg Posted February 28, 2007 Author Report Posted February 28, 2007 Thanks to you all for the info given. Now not keen to put boat down at Rockley and now considering swinging mooring . Being a complete boat novice this is all very daunting, and it doesnt help going in for this op because i will be laid up for most of March and need to sort this out asap. The mooring that the boat is on is paid up until 1st April. So really looking for the cheapest/ safest option available for about 6mths until berth is available at Weymouth . PANIC MODE IS SETTING IN. HHHHHEEEEEEELLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPP. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !! ! !! ! ! ! ! ! ! Jas Quote
Adam F Posted February 28, 2007 Report Posted February 28, 2007 Jas, When I was looking for moorings a few months ago, Sam Chapman suggested Poole Haven Boat Park - they do short term berths and are nice and secure - may be worth looking into that?? Quote

Basically you want a period of storage just at the time the stored boats are being put in the water. If you end up in Poole the cheapest swinging moorings are to be had at Davis's at SANDBANKS, not the one in Hamworthy. Same family but at war!! Any road up the Sandbanks fellah is a charming old codger, has no facilities, no ferry,no parking and a rickety old jetty (hence cheap). Thinking laterally you won't need a dinghy as I could almost guarantee that one of us could meet you at Davis's jetty and ferry you out most any time you wanted. (put my name down for a start). Sam Posted February 28, 2007 Report Posted February 28, 2007 jason i do strongly recommend poole quay boat haven prices are very competitive and the boat is very secure. the staff are alright too sam Quote
Maverick Martin Posted February 28, 2007 Report Posted February 28, 2007 Jason If you are going to be laid up for a while i would strongly recomend not having a swinging mooring. Reason is if the boat is easliy reachable ie pontoon or stored ashore we (club members) can keep our beady eyes on it for you. It would be a little more difficult for us to check if its afloat Just a thought, Martin Quote
pegleg Posted February 28, 2007 Author Report Posted February 28, 2007 Thanks Martin . I have called poole quay boat haven and they have no spaces available. Back to the drawing board...... I am starting to realise that ringing around all of these marinas in a bid to save a couple of quid is becoming quite fruitless. As i say new territory for me.... Any more ideas guys ? Cheers Jas Quote
lady jane Posted February 28, 2007 Report Posted February 28, 2007 jas, you could try weymouth and portland national sailing club, they have a hoist and hard standing for short and long term. www.wpnsa.org.uk i used to leave my boat there and had no problems. cheers andy Quote
