Indulgant New Toy Or Essential Saftey Kit?

Probably a bit of both in all honesty - arrived today was my new Navman 3100 Fuel Computer -

 

Basically even though I have fitted a new sender to OotB's tank, which works wonderfully, when underway the sender has a tendancy to bounce a little which is reflected on the gauge and also when she comes onto the plane I 'loose' about 1/4 of a tank....

 

Whilst this is OK for short range trips where I know I have brimmed the tank beforehand, longer range trips where I may be running within 1/4 of a tank on the way back I felt I needed more / better / acurate info.

 

It set me back

Just to say if anyone has a Navman fishfider or gps/chartplotter, you can buy a fuel gauge which connects to the unit and it gives the same info as the fuel computer.

I'd be really keen to here your comments after a few trips.

I am looking for "add ons" to recommend to customers, but don't want to recommend a lemon so any comments over accuracy, glitches etc would be very much appreciated.

I have a simular unit for the Volvo, It is not a part that came with the engine so I need to test it before I build it into the dash.

It seems well worth fitting to keep an eye on the effeciency of the boat

Sounds interesting, did think about the smaller unit for the 165 but they do say you really need a larger engine than a 60 4-stroke for best results.

I have justed fitted the Navman Fuel 3200 for the diesel engine a bit more expensive

Does drifting bugger up the MPG and range readings - Ie. I went wrecking last weekend - it was 25 miles each way, yet I did 66 miles according to the plotter for the whole day. So that's 16 miles of 'fishing', obviously half of that was drifting, the other half motoring back up for another drift. 8 miles of drifting in an avarage day's fishing could create a significant error in your calculations, even more so if bassing in 3.5knot tides.

It works on how much fuel you have to start with and the using info provided by the gauge, it sense how much fuel is being used and it works out exactly how much fiel is left and at what range it can do.

 

So drifting use no fuel if engine is switch off, and it shouldn't bugger up the reading.

I would have thought that drifting would appaear as distance covered for no fuel used, which would then cause false range remaining calculations and overall "mpg" figures.

I can see that it wouldn't effect instantanious "mpg" or fuel remaining.

On the diesel version you fit a flow meter on the fuel line in and one on the return so everytime you run the engine it subtracts the amount of fuel from the total.

The key issue is that the unit is fitted to be on when the engine is - so wired through the ignition.

 

This way the unit only runs calculations when you are using fuel so no false calculations.
